House Hunting: What I Wore

When millennial pink exploded on the scene I wasn’t overly interested. My style goals have always included looking elegant and sophisticated which pink seemed the antithesisĀ of. The older I got the less important it felt toĀ look sophisticated but I still wanted to look elegant. I shared my complicated history with pink here, and how to choose your most flattering pink here.

Over the last few years I’ve slowly added more pink to my wardrobe and this year I’ve gone all in with this trench coat. I tried it on during a dressing room diaries at TalbotsĀ and fell hard. I knew I liked it but after your reaction, IĀ looked at my images closer and decided I had to own it.

Style Tip –Ā Begin taking selfies of your outfits to get a different perspective of how things look on you.

Our weekends are all about visiting open houses these days so I took this trench out for its inaugural wearing on Saturday. Can I just say, I love it! Color does have the power to transform gloomy days and our’s was certainly that. It went from dark and ominous to cerulean skies with puffy clouds to torrential downpours. No matter the skies, I felt cheerful and happy wearing this coat.Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life wearing NYDJ Marilyn jeans in black with Talbots Modern Trench coat in pink

I wore it over a thin cotton turtleneck,Ā NYDJ straight jeans, and cozy booties. IĀ find wool and cashmere turtlenecks too warm for me these days but lightweight cotton is perfect. These jeans have a full 10″ rise which hides/prevents muffin top. If I ever hear rises are going back down this will be the brand I stock up on. I’ve been wearing NYDJ for years because their lift-tuck technology gives great tummy control, they wash beautifully and are available in tons of leg options.

I’ve become more flexible with my styleĀ as I age. I enjoy experimenting and am finding more joy in fashion. This pink may not look sophisticatedĀ but it sure is flattering and fun to wear. TheĀ older I get,Ā the more I use flattering and fun as a yardstick to measure which garments to wear.

How about you?

Thanks for reading and have a great day.

  1. You look fabulous in this pink trench ā€” and all the cool pastel colors you wear to complement your fair complexion. I have a pale, warm complexion, with blue eyes and dark hair, so bought this Talbots coat, in the golden color. I love it!

    1. That sounds wonderful for your coloring Janet. I really adore the quality of this trench. We will wear them for years!

  2. Pretty + practical = perfect! You look great!

  3. You look so pretty and so happy today too! Love your pink trench and for house hunting….you look smashing! Enjoy the search! Hope you find your next “home”!
    I think you will……

  4. You look wonderful in pink.

  5. You look terrific in that color, Jennifer! Could you tell me what sort of pink this is, in real life? On your blog it looks like a cool, clear pink with no warm tone. At the Talbots website, however, it appears extremely warm. Only the coolest of colors work for me, so I just had to ask.

I never miss your blog posts!

    1. Thank you! Itā€™s cooler than it looks on the Talbots website but not frosty. Medium blush pink describes it best.

  6. I read your links to previous “pink” posts and I have to say I agree with everything you wrote. Drives me crazy when someone says I can’t wear_. Who says? Maybe she was wrong? It’s just fashion! Try things on. Preferably in a full length mirror. Pink, for instance comes in pink-y beige, pastel pink, rose, raspberry, hot pink, coral, salmon… Pick clothes because you love them, not because they fit some “rule” and you will wear them with style. I love you in that coat!

    1. Yes, yes, yes! Youā€™re absolutely right and said it perfectly Lily. Weā€™ve got to wear what we love, that makes us feel happy. Or at the very least, good. Rules are best seen as guidelines.

  7. Love this coat and it is a ray of sunshine. How did the HH go? I’m also HH in Denver and have days that I get a bit discouraged. Good Luck & bring on the Spring.

    1. HH did not go well. You know how tough it is. We keep hoping the perfect or almost perfect house will come on the market thatā€™s within our price range. It is often discouraging. Good luck Lesley.

Looking at the gorgeous trench makes me sad to think of the basic black one hanging in my closet waiting for spring to arrive. Would it be so wrong to own two, I ask myself. I love pink and this shade suits you to a T! As for the boots. I have started giving up heals but I have a couple pairs that have the internal structure my feet need and I can wear them with no problems. It is amazing what a well made pair of shoes can do! Thanks for all your work here and good luck house hunting.

    1. Thanks for the encouragement Catherine. Iā€™m donating uncomfortable footwear these days too. Lifeā€™s too short to be uncomfortable. FYI- I have worn the same black trench coat for 25+ years. This pink one is the breath of spring my wardrobe and spirits need. So no. It wouldnā€™t be wrong to consider adding one that really rings your bell.

  10. Love that coat and REALLY love those glasses. You look wonderful. Good luck with the house hunt!

  11. The pink trench looks so good. Love it with the turtle neck and hoops. Good luck on the house hunt. Very interested to see and hear what you are seeing.

    1. Thank you Linda. I will start sharing what house hunting is like these days. Itā€™s rather tortuous but I want a home, so we carry on.

  12. Gorgeous! I love pink and this trench is just perfect! You look fabulous and yes color really can brighten up a cloudy day. – Amy

  13. This is one of the best colors on you. You look fabulous! And your glasses go perfectly! A breath of spring in February.

    1. Thank you Marian. My daughter ordered these sunglasses last summer and left them for me. She has the best taste ever.

  14. Oh my goodness, I LOVE it!!! When I was looking at these I was thinking how so many colors just look so good over a black column, but that coat is going to be a workhorse. I predict you wear it soooo much. Beautiful!

    1. Thanks so much Lisa! I am wearing it a ton. It goes over everything!

  15. Iā€™m so glad you went back for it. It is such a flattering, fun colour. Regardless of the rain and the chore of house hunting, you still have a big smile on your face.
I love NYDJ too! I found you need to size down. You?

  16. Love this look and the way the necklace adds to your over all elegance. Good luck with your house hunting. How is Lucy doing?

    1. Lucy is slowing down at 14, but still bolts after the rabbits in our yard like a rocket ship. Sheā€™s such a sweet girl. Thanks for asking.

  17. I bought a brighter, denser hued pink rain jacket by Michael Kors to replace a rather tired silver trench. I think a lot of women are drawn to pinks but don’t confidently indulge. It can be such a flattering and refreshing color.

    1. I find myself attracted to all pinks these days. I agree many women shy away from it. Iā€™m going to explore it further and share here. Your pink sounds wonderful.
