Style Over 50: Out & About on the Oregon Coast

Just because I’m traveling in a trailer this week doesn’t mean I’ll be comfortable wearing any old thing. My clothes need to be functional for where I am but also fit my style recipe. I struggle with overly casual clothes and always try to feel pulled together. I’m the woman whose friend phoned prior to a backyard picnic and said, “Remember Jennifer, this is casual!”. LOL.

Welcome to this week’s Hit Your Style Sweet Spot, my weekly collaboration with Pam Lutrell.

Your Style Sweet Spot is when you knowĀ your appearance is sending the message you intend and feel confident you look your best.

Tillamook Beach, Oregon

We’ve set up camp along the Oregon coast, and the weather is brilliant. There’s nothing wishy-washy about the climate here. It’s either warm and sunny or raining cats and dogs with blustery winds off the ocean.

It’s sweater and sturdy shoe weather. I love this blue cashmere sweater, but discovered when I put it on that it has pills. If I were at home, I’d have my sweater shaver to remove them. Who thinks to bring a sweater shaver in an RV? Not me, so I ignored them.

cashmere and sunglasses are important on the coast

I’m wearing my favorite earrings from my Mom. I inherited several things from her, but she bought these while we were on a special trip together to Ireland, so they remind me of her and the fun we shared.

walking the tracks of the Oregon Scenic Railway

We heard train whistles off and on throughout the day, so when we found these tracks, we investigated.

Historic steam locomotive along the Oregon Scenic railroad

This historic steam locomotive is the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad. It chugs along the Tillamook Bay and gives views of the gorgeous coast.

My Soft Surroundings Denim Metro leggings are perfect for this weather. Nothing binds and they give where I need them to.

Black Oiled Dansko Professional classic

I’m so glad I tossed these Dansko shoes in my bag. I loved and depended on their comfort during my years working retail. Nothing has changed. They’re not hip looking, but they’re supportive, keep my feet dry and are very comfortable. They’re ugly in a cute way and very sensible for where I am.

Enjoying Tillamook Beach from under a big sun hat

We spent the afternoon at the beach. The vampire in me wrapped my scarf around my neck for extra sun protection.

We stayed where we were, well into the evening and enjoyed the light show, mother nature put on.

Tossing on the scarf, earrings and French Kande bracelet upped my confidence to Hit My Style Sweet Spot. Without them, I would have felt rather dull and frumpy.

Now let’s go over and see how Pam hits her Style Sweet Spot.

  1. I always enjoy your posts – even though I’m reading them while wearing old jeans and I stained t-shirt.

    1. Thanks Elaine! I’m reading your comment wearing an old T-shirt and cotton skirt from Target with rubber flip flops. I’m at the lake, dry camping. And baby it’s hot!

  2. I love the outfit, but I love the Oregon coast even more! It’s one of my favorite states to visit.

    1. Me too, Rena! I could live there so easily.

  3. Being an Oregonian you will be thought native with the Dansko and vampire hat and scarf. Oregonians aren’t sun lovers and we like our Birkenstocks and Danskos!
    You look great.

    1. Thanks Haralee! I love Oregon, all of it! Maybe I need to live there šŸ™‚

  4. Those glasses. Those shoes. You know me I adore the whole thing and LOVE you in all of it.
Does it negate my comment I still love Birkenstocks? šŸ™‚

    1. I adore you Carla! Doesn’t negate it at all! Birkenstocks are very comfy. I used to love mine, but my feet don’t like them anymore. These clogs don’t bend so they’re easier on my bunion.

  5. Wow the shoes remind me of the Roots shoes my old roomie used to wear back in Toronto in the 70s – they look so comfortable and practical. I think they look cute on smallish feet but my size 7s would make them look huge I think! Lovely outfit – the denim leggings look beautiful (and comfy!)

    1. I think they look cute on small feet too! Mine aren’t small…I wear a 9! šŸ™‚

  6. Debra Bartels says:

Off to find me some wine? What a beautiful spot to relax!

  7. I was expecting some Tillamook cheese with that wine. Wine, cheese and fabulous scenery — Oregon has it all in abundance. Can’t wait to go back again!

    1. Oregon does have it all! We love it there.

  8. I love knowing I’m not the only one who has a tendency to overdress! Enjoy! xoxo, Brenda

    1. I always prefer to be over dressed than under dressed! It’s a quirk that just feels right to me, Brenda! XX

  9. Honey Bee says:

    Congratulations on living your dream!

I’m another one of those who “can’t do casual”.

When I was on a recent bus trip, wearing my scarves and my pearls and my pretty sweaters, one of the men on the tour said to me, “Thanks for dressing up for me. It’s so rare to see women in a skirt these days.”

So, just know, you’ll be inspiring others wherever you go. People do notice.

By the way, your blog is one of my favourites. Thank you for sharing all your great ideas.

    Happy travelling.
    Honey Bee

    1. Thanks for the encouragement Honey Bee! It does feel good to dress up a little bit, no matter where I am. Thanks for reading. I’m glad you’re here!

  10. Would you have any suggestions as what to pack for a resort vacation to a tropical location? I am trying to go carryon but it proves to be very challenging!!!

    1. Hi Darlene!
I suggest choosing 2 neutral colors and pack 3-4 tops, 2-3 bottoms and interchange. How long will you be gone?
A sundress, cotton skirt and/or shorts combined with your cotton tops. Bring some scarves to change up the look, a hat, bathing suit and coverup. It’s hard to suggest when I don’t know your style. But that’s what I’d bring for 10 days.

  11. You are spending time in a beautiful place! I love the blue sweater on you! I have a very similar one! And the scarf is beautiful with it. Perfect example that you can be comfortable and casual yet pulled together!

Enjoy wherever your adventure takes you next!

    1. Thanks, Andrea! We’re really enjoying the coast. It’s great shade of blue, I bet it looks great on you!

  12. It looks like you’re having a wonderful time on your trip! What fun to find the historic railway. The scarf and sweater are such a nice casual-but-pulled-together look.

    1. We’ve had some fun discoveries, and a few technical challenges too!! I live and learn, hopefully in style. Thanks Susan!

  13. Loved that sweater. You look great in the bright color. The shoes are a good choice
with comfort and being practical for walking.

Thanks for all the tips and examples. Being new to your blog I am finding some great information and examples plus fresh inspiration. Having come out of an extended time of injury, loss, and weight gain your photos and comments help me to make further effort in my self care and appearance.

Thanks so much. Have a great trip.

    1. Thank you so much, Joan! It warms my heart to know I’ve been able to share some inspiration that helps you. I’m sorry to hear about your struggles, that’s so challenging! You’ll feel so much better, with every little effort you make, and you deserve the best. Thanks for reading and being here.

  14. Such a gorgeous place. I would love to buy an RV and travel the states someday. Such a nice casual outfit too!

    1. That’s what we’re hoping to do, Amy! This short maiden voyage is teaching us many things we’ll need to know, before heading off for longer distances.

  15. Patricia Kimber says:

My husband and I go caravanning often . We live in Australia . It is really relaxing and we love it.

    1. We’re just getting our feet wet with it, Patricia. And enjoying it a lot!

  16. So funny we both put cloud pictures!! I love this color blue on you and you should wear it often. I also love all the photos of things you are seeing and experiencing. Looks fun! Next time I go on a road trip you will be in my head inspiring me to look my best on the trip!

    1. Thanks, Pam. I love that blue. In fact I love all blues. I need to remember that when choosing tops!
