Your Style Comfort Zone

The dog days of summer are upon us and I’m in constant search of ways to look stylish without also looking bedraggled. Some days that’s easy to do and others… I just feel uninspired by my options. Those are the days I try to expand my style comfort zoneĀ by experimenting.

Today I’m back with Pam from Over 50 Feeling 40 to share our style tip for August. It’s easy to get into a fashion rut this time of year. It’s too soon to wear our new or favorite fall clothes and our summer clothes can feel a little flat. What to do?

Step out of your comfort zone. Try something new, spread your style wings and make a new statement. Be brave and creative. Look to women whose style you admire and borrow a few ideas. You may discover an entirely new look that feels fabulous on you.

If you always wear that sun dress with a specific necklace and sandals, change it up by tossing a denim jacket or shirt tied at the waist over it. Always wear earrings and a necklace? Try adding brooches instead. Always choose flat sandals, experiment with new shapes that have a comfortableĀ 1 1/2 ” heel.

Try combining pieces in ways you’ve never mixed before. Visit an antique fair or consignment shop and hunt for some unique accessories. These are the kind of things that keep us from looking like everyone else.

I’m happy to stand out in the crowd and look unique. For August, I’m going to stretch that further and experiment even more.

Now let’s pop over to see Pam’s style tip of the month.

How about you? Are you comfortable standing out from the crowd? Feeling the need to break out of a rut? How are you doing that? Let me know in the comments.

  1. As a recent transplant to Florida, it always seems like summer to me. I keep my wardrobe simple, with white and different shades of blue linen items. But, I like to look a bit edgy. I keep my salt and pepper hair very short and spiked. My sunglasses are a bit outrageous and my main accessory is a large LV bag in white multicolor with lots of brass studs. (Items I bought when I was making good money pre-retirement.) I love not looking like all the other retirees.

  2. Thank goodness for light weight cottons and tissue linen! The link for the earrings went to the pants.

I agree that August is a tricky month – I always grow tired of my summer clothes long before summer fades. It’s only the beginning of the month with temperatures in the mid-90s and I’m chomping at the bit, waiting for the fall stuff to show up in the stores. Thanks for your ideas – my wilted t-shirts and linen trousers could use a little sprucing up..

  4. I am very conservative and like to blend in rather than stand out or call attention to myself. I love linen and found a great dress that I absolutely love and wear it several times a week. When I was in the south of France I so admired the village women’s style of wearing a simple linen dress often more than once in a week so I feel very comfortable doing this too!

  5. Yes summer clothes feeling “flat”… good choice of words. I’m going through my clothes to see what I haven’t gotten use of yet this summer. Sandles and bags etc. August still being very hot and sticky (and I know myself, hot natured) I have to stick with cooler materials. Summer clearance sales already popping up so a few new things also! Thanks for tipsā£ļø????????????????????

    1. I’m shopping at the summer sales too! It’s a great time to refresh things.

You look wonderfully late summer chic. And you are carrying a great bag! Is it one that’s available anywhere online? You have inspired me to check out a local vintage shop this weekend for some inspiration.

    1. Thanks Stormy. (Love your name!) My bag is old but I will try to locate one that looks similar for you.

  8. I also agree with checking out consignment and antique stores, I have found some intereresting pieces in online auctions, truly unique and I sometimes combine them, twisting more than one vintage choker for a fun look. And it’s time to get out some sandals infallible colors and update pedicure to coordinate. weekend projects! Thanks for a nice post and reminders on ways to refresh our summer looks Jennifer – enjoy the weekend.

    1. I’ll be at an Antique Fair this weekend…selling… and hope to spot some goodies for me:)

  9. I love the idea of visiting an antique show or consignment shop for some fun ideas! I wore a necklace to work yesterday I recently found at a consignment shop and it gave a simple neutral outfit a real pop. You look lovely as always.

    1. I love having things no one else does. It’s a great way to look original!
