Would You Wear It: Pattern on Top or Bottom

Would You Wear It: Pattern on Top or Bottom

Happy Saturday ladies! Where did this week go? Mine felt shorter than usual because we spent it traveling between the Bay Area, wine country, the Sacramento area then back to the Bay Area for a dinner party tonight. I logged a lot of miles behind the wheel and am looking forward to staying home for a bit.

If it’s Saturday, it must be time for time for Would You Wear It! Each Saturday Pam Lutrell from Over50Feeling 40 and I share a mannequin we have run across and ask if you would wear what it is wearing.

There’s a lot happening in this picture so pick one mannequin or tell us how you feel about all of them. They share a  similar color theme and pattern intensity on different parts of the body. So tell me, ladies, would you wear this and why or why not based on your lifestyle, body shape or coloring.

I like the colors and the patterns in all the outfits. But, I realized a while back that when I buy a pattern, even if I like it, it ends up sitting in my closet unworn. I’m just not comfortable in them. Also, the necklaces are too chunky for me. I could see myself wearing those pants on the left in that brownish rust color.

I wouldn’t wear the outfit in the middle because it draws attention to the bottom half of the body, which I don’t want. I like the black outfit because the pattern top is attractive & not too overwhelming. The outfit on the left is nice too, but I’d have to try it on to see if the jacket is too long for my short stature.

  3. October 6, 2018 / 4:21 am

Love all three! Would actually wear these! The only item I “might” change is the white jacket, center. Maybe in pale tan or beige? But, love these looks.

  4. October 6, 2018 / 4:26 am

I would try them on…I have worn this type of styling for years. But, I would need to see them on before making that final decision.

  5. October 6, 2018 / 4:42 am

I would not wear anything of these 3 outfits. I do not usually patterns at all, and would never never wear patterned pants. I don’t wear flowered tops.

  6. October 6, 2018 / 5:02 am

I saw quite a few women here wearing very loud palazzo pants–flowing, with Pucci-style prints. I thought they looked great. Always with something very simple on top, like a simple T or tank top.
I would consider it with the right pattern.
    Same with a cardigan/jacket.
OTOH, since I tend to wear clothes forever and have a rather small (and shrinking) wardrobe, I probably would not go out and buy an eye-catching pattern. But if it were given to me….
I recently discovered LindaVWright on Instagram. She posted a photo today with lots of pattern–full of fun. Why not!

Nope. Those patterns are too big for me. The jewelry is also too big.

  8. October 6, 2018 / 5:31 am

I don’t go for autumn tones as I’m better off wearing cool colors, but the far left outfit is classy. The vertical center stripes give a streamlined look and would make me look taller. I like the deep teal/rust combination too… a bit unusual. I’d wear a cream or ivory top underneath though… white seems too stark.

    I like all three but…..
The first isn’t my color, the middle is great but I am not bold enough to wear the leggings and the third is probably my choice though I have got to get away from a black palette. But if the coloring was different or I was a more stylish dresser, they’re all very nice and I would wear them.

  10. October 6, 2018 / 6:06 am

I used to wear more print but as I grow older and wear my clothing more often and buy less, I am usually satisfied with a print scarf.

These Warm hues are all wrong for me but like the individual pieces. The black outfit on right would be the
better style for me, plus I like florals but again, teal hue is not flattering. For examle; the Mulberry Red separates with tank of coordinating leopard, which I purchased recently from Chico’s, are better in Cool hues for my coloring. I love patterns and florals to coordinate with other pieces in my wardrobe.

I tend to wear patterns on top, but I like the background color of the middle pants so I would give that a try!

These Warm hues are all wrong for me, though I do love floral and pattern to mix & match. The black outfit on right would be the best for my 5’4″ body (no teal tho). Cool hues are best for me; Chico’s Mulberry Red separates with coordinating leopard tank, which I purchased recently. Like all the individual pieces but not in these hues.

I have a pair of bold print pants and love them even at 5-2. They are a slim cut which makes a difference.

Print pants are fun! like the combination in the center with the print pants. I occasionally buy a pair of print pants or jeans when I see them in a print I love. Since I am short (5’ 4” 120 lbs), I think small prints look best on me so I would not buy the print modeled. However, I do like this look.

I wear a lot of solids, most of my prints are small dots or stripes. Some of my summer dresses have small all over prints. The prints in the photo look inexpensive to my eye, and the print is too big, so I would pass.

I would try them all on. Life is too short and one should step out of their comfort zone every so often. You never know how something will look until you try it on!

First of all, I love teal! I tend to wear prints on top, not the bottom. If I’m going to wear a floral, it has to be on a dark background. It tend to read less sweet to me.
The floral top with the black slim pants I like and would wear. The floral pants shown in the middle are displayed nicely with the solid, teal top and white safari jacket but I don’t think I would buy the pants. I don’t like pattern on my pants unless it’s a pinstripe or houndstooth ( both classic). The one on the left is a no. I don’t like the rust with the teal jacket nor the rust coloured pants. I’ll wear dark brown jeans but not rust. I believe it looks best on an autumn.

I like the left style best as I find I am drawn to the fall colours. Love the long Nehru style jacket. Used to stay away from patterned pants but now pair them with solid colours. I do not tend to wear white like Jennifer but alas, I am a messy gal! Did not wear white at my wedding but a cotton ecru!

  21. Janet
    October 6, 2018 / 8:19 am

I’m a big fan of Chicos because their quality and style are great but the icing on the cake for me is the colour and pattern. I also like their coordinated outfits. In a time where so many people only wear solids, I need more to interest me. I love pattern but florals can’t be too sweet or geometrics too crazy. So, I would wear all three above with the exception of the patterned pants since my legs are a bit heavy for it to be really flattering. Would prefer less warm brown shades but can be flexible. I would like to see more cool browns but rarely do.

I would wear the two on the right. The jacket on the left is too long for me. The middle looks like fun and I’ve been kind of obsessed with contrast sleeves. I would add a chunky necklace to amp it up a bit.

  23. October 6, 2018 / 8:47 am

I like all 3 outfits, but for me, I’d choose the one on the left. I love the fall colors and adore that long topper! All 3 of those pieces could work into a nice travel wardrobe. By adding jeans, a black top and black pant, you’d have nice casual to evening looks for several days.

  24. Alison
    October 6, 2018 / 9:03 am

I’d wear the first two, but not the third. I seem to be an outlier in this group because a) I avoid black because it washes out my pasty-pale facial features and b) I don’t really like solids. Solid colors show any spot that falls on them, and I somehow attract spots. Give me a nice forgiving print any day. My personal preference is paisley.
I actually tried on that lovely jacket on the left, which, BTW is reversible, but as others have stated, the warm palette really doesn’t work for me (the teal is great, but the chestnut/rust not so much) but the killer was NO POCKETS. Since everyone carries a smartphone now, you’d think clothing designers would accommodate. I’ve just decided to vote with my wallet. If it doesn’t have a pocket big enough for a smartphone (how many pants have you tried on with tiny little pockets barely large enough to hold a tissue?), then it stays in the store.

I love the pattern on the pants, but probably wouldn’t wear them. I only have two patterned pairs of pants in my closet, one gingham check and the other is very neutral. I tend to be bigger on the bottom than top, so I feel that patterns on the bottom draws attention there. Like many others here – when I buy patterned tops, I hardly ever wear them. I do however wear many patterned scarves.

  26. October 6, 2018 / 9:17 am

I just bought the top on the right the other day and wore it to dinner and a concert last night! I styled it with skinny black pants and a wonderful Chico’s necklace with colors found in the top, ending in a tassel. Would never wear those patterned pants. Ugh.

I like the outfits on the right and left, but not the middle. Those print leggings look like Lularoe leggings. I’d never wear them.

  28. Sandy
    October 6, 2018 / 9:25 am

I am short – only 5 ft tall. I am more comfortable in solid colors and very small print (no bigger than my fist). So I wouldn’t wear any of these. If I’m going to wear a small print – it’s never my pants.

  29. Becky
    October 6, 2018 / 11:05 am

I like the outfit on the left. I like the open jacket, the neutral color of the top & the solid color of the pants pulling out one of the colors of the jacket. I like the jacket & top of the middle outfit, but the bold pattern of the pants would not be flattering to my bottom half. If the pattern was smaller, I might give it a try. I don’t care for the pattern/color mix of the top on the right. It is just a bit too busy for my taste.

It has been a few years since I wore printed pants. At some point, I began to dislike them although I had worn them regularly. I can’t tell you why. I have been curious myself why I will stop liking a style I once wore. I’m not sure it’s just from shifting fashion trends although I do tend to avoid anything too trendy. I imagine I’m not alone in this, but I haven’t really asked anyone if they feel the same way. Our tastes are often a mystery, even to us.

I love all the looks! While the majority of my wardrobe is solids, I love prints because of the visual interest it creates. If I wear all solids, I add a print scarf. One of my go-to looks is a print dress with a solid blazer or jacket or cardigan. With separates, I love print pants and skirts. Print skirts seem to be fine, as long as the print is smaller and more of a classic print. I have the be careful with print pants. I would definitely try the print pants. I love the ivory utility jacket – might have to pick that one up. I have tried the longer print kimono-style jackets at Chico’s because I love them, but they overwhelm me. Love these looks!!!

I’d go with the one in the middle. It’s a cute outfit with the utility jacket. My only gripe is that when the pants are rolled up you can see that the pattern is printed onto the material because the rolled-up part is white. I’d like them better if the cuff area had a pattern.

I’m kind of crafty with my sewing machine, if they were my pants I’d be tempted to line the bottom of those rollup pants with a contrasting material so when you cuffed them it wasn’t white.

I like the far left but I have a policy about no artsy jackets.

I realized over time that I just am not comfortable in florals. And the print pants would be a definite no for me…they would accentuate my bottom half, which I never do.

I know you said to pick one mannequin, but I actually like all three!!! I’m not sure how I would like in them, but I would definitely try them on. Love the mix of patterns and the colors are beautiful!

I love the detail on the pants on the left!

  35. Suzanne Young

I would wear outfits #1 and 2. They are perfect for my lifestyle and the fall colors are just right for me. I wouldn’t wear outfit #3 because it is too dark, that much black would overpower my rather pale skin. I love the scale of the jewelry which draws attention away from my full bust.

  36. Diana
    October 6, 2018 / 4:07 pm

Starting from left to right, the mannequin on the left I would wear the pants, I like the detail at the bottom. Not sure what the top looks like, too hidden. The open jacket is a no for my body shape. I need jackets that have an A-line to them to make my apple shape look like it has some sort of a waste. I love the jacket on the mannequin in the middle! Yes, I would wear that! I rarely wear any pattern on my bottom half would not wear these. Like the colors, though and the color of the top. The last one on the right, I would try that top on, see how it looked on my body shape. The capri pants, I’d pass on at this time of year. (We got our first snowfall on Sept. 28th in MT.)

Oh how I love that center outfit! The colors, the proportion, the entire look…Oh YES, I would wear it and seeking to buy now! The jacket is too heavy for South Florida weather no matter what season. A linen top could be substituted in the same proportion and be perfect for casual outings. Thank you for posting Jennifer.

I love all three looks. The far left seems a bit dressier with the longish jacket, and I would wear it out to dinner. The fall colors are great. The middle one is my favorite. I love all the colors and would wear it on the weekends to a winery, or out running errands. It is too fun to wear to work. The one on the right seems more work appropriate and I would happily wear it t9 work.

Pretty fall outfits! My body shape is a pyramid so the outfit to the right would be most flattering for me. If they had pants in the same solid color as the top in the middle, that solid column of color with the pop of light in the jacket (maybe a shorter length, don’t want it to hit at my widest area) would be a good choice. Long flowy tops like the one to the left can also be flattering. This length of pants is not my best length, I prefer a top of the shoe length.

  42. Cynthia
    October 7, 2018 / 6:07 pm

I like all of these outfits but my favorite is the one on the right. The pattern mixing and color combination give the top some verve, and I could wear it with different colored bottoms. I do like the black cropped pants shown but would love to try it with teal leggings or slim pants. I am not a fan of the necklace; I think I would go with earrings and bracelets that pick out different tones in the top.

  43. Amanda
    October 8, 2018 / 7:36 am

I would wear the center outfit without the white jacket. The fewer pieces I have to wear the better. I am a petite top but a misses bottom for my longer than average legs for being 5’3″. Since Chico’s offers both, I shop there often. The other outfits are too fussy for me.
