What’s in My Makeup Bag

If you’re like me, some beauty and makeup products get used to the bottom of the jar, then replaced. The rest end up under the sink, never to be finished. I like to experiment with new things but few earn a permanent spot in my regime. Here’s what’s being used up and replaced in my beauty arsenal these days.

I use these sunscreens… every…single…day. Rain or shine, indoor day or out. And yes, I know that layering sunscreen does not increase your SPF coverage, but I use these for different purposes.

I start with this Josie Maran which I use as my face and neck moisturizer. Then this Athelios gets slathered on my neck, chest, and arms. Next, I use this Brightening Perfector on my face as a makeup primer. I follow up with this Elta MD which acts as my tinted moisturizer since I don’t wear foundation.

I use this Men’s Rogaine morning and night, without fail. My doctor told me to use the men’s version which has helped my thinning hair a lot. Before blow drying, I spray the roots of my hair with this Body Builder. After my hair is dry I spray with this Doo Over which adds tons of volume.

I’ve used this mascara for years. The unique comb-like brush goes on smoothly and never clumps. I use it in black.

This stay-on lip fixation is non-drying and long-lasting. I use it as a base under all my lip colors so when my lipstick wears off, I still have some tint on. This Airbrush Concealer paints on with its own brush and never looks cakey. I apply it to the inside corner and under my eyes, as the last step to brighten any shadows. I also brush it under my eyebrows to open the eyes.

I stock up and buy the above products in multiples because I know I’ll use them.

What do you love and used to the end of the container? I’d love to know.

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Boots No. 7 from Target: serum, day cream and night cream, have been my standard for years. I’m 70 and everyone says I look 50 ish. Glad to hear you promoting sunscreen all year long. It’s been my rule. Laroche-Posay Anthelios is one of the best. Neutrogena with Helioplex is good too.

I’ve heard great things about the Boots line. Sunscreen is so important. Always. I had melanoma several years ago so I take my sun protection seriously.

Love hearing your recs, Jennifer, as I have similar coloring. I’m a fan of the IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream with SPF 50+ in Fair. What is the name of the Lip Fixation shade shown in your last photo? It looks really pretty.

    • October 24, 2017 / 3:37 pm

The shade is Fascination. I’ve worn it for years Ann, and hope they don’t discontinue it!

I see in the past you have used Nioxin and now you use Rogaine for Men. What do you think is the best?

    • October 24, 2017 / 3:39 pm

I have had my best success with the men’s 5% Rogaine. When I tried the Nioxin, I used the 2% which was not as strong.

Rodan and Fields skin care is the program I have been on for about 3 years and I love it. Make up is Estee Lauder. I’ve tried the tinted moisturizer and there just isn’t enough coverage for me. Eye makeup is where I experiment.

I love playing with eye makeup! It is flat out fun to try new techniques and colors. I’ve heard very good things about the Rodan and Fields line.

I love to see what others use, you can learn so much! I have recently started using Australian Gold tinted sunscreen. I found it through Hot and Flashy’s YouTube channel and I really like it.

I’ve not heard of the La Mav brand. I love that it’s organic. I’ll have to see if it’s available in the US!

One of my favorite and must-have products is SK-II Facial Treatment Essence. I started using this in 2012 and have not ever stopped. At the time, I thought I looked tired all the time and my skin looked dry and lifeless. A saleswoman at Nordstrom’s recommended it; I purchased thinking I would hate it and regret the $100 + spent. I saw a difference in two weeks, and I am a believer. There is a reason Cate Blanchett, the face of the brand, looks so amazing. This transformed my skin and made it soft and returned luminosity. I now buy the largest size bottle (11 ounces) with a pump (about $300) as this works out to about $26 per ounce. I pump small amounts at a time into small refillable spray bottle which is great for everyday use and travel. It lasts a long time (like 9 months) as you don’t need more than about 3 to 4 sprays to cover your face and neck. I consider it my toner and never miss a day. After I wash morning and evening, I spray my face and neck with SK-II and let it dry. If you decide to use it, use the spray bottle method or decant into your palms and tap on your face and then rub all over your hands. Do not waste on a cotton pad. After the SK-II, I then use serums. For a morning serum, I really like SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic. It is pricey, about $165 for a 1-ounce bottle, but the bottle lasts 6 months. This comes highly recommended by dermatologists, and it brightens my face. At night, I use a retinoid cream recommended by my dermatologist, Avene Retrinal 0.1 Intensive Cream, which is reasonably priced at $75. I also use the Boots No. 7 serum and really like it. For evening and daytime moisturizers, I use L’Oreal drugstore brands. For makeup, I use Bobbi Brown and Jane Iredale and Beauty Counter. I live in Las Vegas so it is a constant battle to keep my skin hydrated. These products are my go-tos!

Thanks for your SK-II recommendation. I’ve been curious about the line. I’m a fan of the SkinCeuticals C serum. My dermatologist got me started using it. It’s pretty clear that quality skin products make a big difference.

In an earlier post you recommended a product called Nioxin for your hair loss and thinning hair. This post recommends Rogain for Men. Which do you actually prefer?

    • October 27, 2017 / 9:37 pm

Nioxin contains minoxidil which is also in Rogaine. It is the active ingredient. The Nioxin product I tried had a 2% concentration which was pleasant to use and effective.
I prefer a 5% solution, no matter the brand. I’m simply finding the stronger concentration of minoxidyl and works better.
