Stretch Pants and Back Road Travel

This latest holiday has wrecked havoc on my body in more ways than one. That scrape on my arm from our horseback escapade has turned Technicolor and spread to be about 3″ across so it’s living under a band-aidĀ until it fades. My body has also suffered expected challenges which I planned ahead for when I packed.

Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life in Cedarville CAHolidays usually mean I’ve said to heck with healthy eating (hello, fried pickles!) and indulged way more than I care to admit. Long days driving home can be torturous in the comfiest jeans so I prefer to wear stretch pants. I need to feel comfy but refuse to look sloppy. My hair seldom gets the care it needs so I bring hats and scarves.

We drove home through the back roads of Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and California, visiting some of the smallest towns I’ve ever been in. Populations ranged from 5 – 1,200+ which meant if you blinked,Ā you missed some of them.

We stayed at theCedarville is just three blocks long, with a serene atmosphere and friendly people. It felt like the middle of nowhere and was a great experience. We stayed in lucky room #13 which had a slight bordello-ish decor.

Even my feet demand a loose fit at the end of a holiday so I pack my most forgiving shoes. These Eileen Fisher sandals were purchased for a trip several years ago and have been worn so much I’m looking to replace them. They have a sneaker sole and are the most comfortable shoes I own! They’re a very soft leather and never feel tight.

Part of looking good on vacation for me is planning for fluctuating fit issues. Even if it’s just swollen feet, it helps to pack accordingly. Accessories are also a powerful tool for feeling confident… even in the most casual attire.

Are there things you always pack for vacation?

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

  1. We stayed at the Surprise Valley Hot Springs several years ago. It just so happened that they were having a rodeo in Cedarville that weekend, which was a whole lot of fun for two city-raised folks! Next time don’t miss Warner Mountain Weavers…you probably walked right by it.
The back roads of our country are so interesting to explore; glad you had a good time, but sorry for the bumps and bruises.

    1. We will be back and I will not miss Warner Mountain Weavers:)

  2. You really were in the middle of nowhere – I grew up not too far from there…east of Redding, between Mt Shasta and Mt Lassen. It was an idyllic childhood, but I could not live there anymore. I bet you were the best dressed person for miles around!

Those pants definitely look comfy, and I bet they snap right back into shape! Long car trips are a challenge. we’re getting ready to take one in a couple of days, I think I’ll be wearing something stretchy as well. I’m really short, so I tend to crunch up my legs or put my feet on the dash board when I’m not driving the car. My sit bones are what bother me the most on long drives.

    1. Buy an inflatable donut to sit on. Similar to what new Moms use. It really helps a lot! Safe travels.

Try Arnicare (Arnica Montana) to heal that bruise quickly. It is an all natural gel you can buy OTC. Dermatologists recommend to women getting facial injections to keep bruising and swelling down. Also a pain reliever. Fragrance free. .

When I’m going to be sitting in a car/or flying for hours I wear knee high support stockings. You can get them over the counter or measured at a medical supply store = more expensive. They are great for the feet/legs.

    1. I’ve wondered about them. Are they just to prevent varicose veins or are they comfy? My legs are miserable when I sit for a long time.

      1. I second the support stockings. They help my ankles stay manageable on long car trips and/or plane rides. I don’t buy the super constrictors, but the knee highs are comfortable.

        Hi there

Most times I don’t even feel like I’m wearing them. Mine were measured for me.

I find them comfortable – don’t even feel like I have them on. I had my leg measured for them.

  5. Interesting pants! Might have to try them. And my favorite sandals. So glad I got they…they’re very forgiving on hot humid days when I’ve eaten too much salt. šŸ™‚

    1. Aren’t those sandals the best?! I’ve worn mine to death. Yes, salt is a bad culprit of mine:)

  6. L H Carter says:

Hooray! You are rockin’ those bare arms in the tank top! It’s still summer-hot in early September here in FL.

    1. Many thanks! I’m not wild about baring my upper arms but in the beastly heat, I go for it!

  7. You manage comfortable and elegant admirably. You seem to have investment pieces there. I’d take tried and tested too if I’d been doing that trip.

    1. Tried and tested is a great observation Annemarie. Finding out something pinches is never fun when you’re dressing out of a suitcase.

  8. Jennifer, you look great as always. I agree with being comfortable while traveling, for me I wear a lot of knit high waisted dresses that are super comfortable. (most from Soma or Chico’s). Enjoy your journey home.

    1. Dresses are the most comfy, I agree Joi. I didn’t pack any for this trip because…camping:)

Most all of our travels are in our RV so I always have plenty of choices. I sometimes wear yoga pants and tops but I try to “do” my hair and makeup and I NEVER go anywhere but to bed without my earrings. My go to pair are simple gold hoops. Keep enjoying life at home or on the road Jennifer.

    1. I’m with you in the earrings Bonna! I seldom go without unless I have on a huge necklace.

  10. For a vacation like the one you were on, I would have packed my athletic shoes and Advil! I do like the Eileen Fisher sandals…they look perfect. Glad you had fun!

    1. I wore athletic shoes for hiking but they’re so hot!! It was a blast.
