Skirting the Issue

The iconic pencil skirt is one of my all-time favorites. It’s sleek shape slims the hips and has been a closet classic since it was first introduced by Christian Dior in 1954. I’ve owned several over the years (they never go out of style) but the ones I reach for most often have stretch. Stiff ones with waistbands that bind or dig when I sit down, have no place in my wardrobe.

At $29.95 this skirt is an amazing value. The possibilities are endless for this pencil skirt!Ā  I’ll be wearing it with tights and knee boots, bare legs and tee shirt in the summer, stockings and heels, for dinner out, etc etc.

Today I’ve styled it with the newJennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life wearing V-neck Fit and Flare from Covered PerfectlyIt has the same slimming princess seaming as the Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life wearing Covered perfectlyWaistbands that are too tight and tops that are too clingy are the perfectĀ recipe for a muffin topĀ so I avoid them.

This vibrant Royal Blue is a knockout with black and perfect with jeans. I love this top styled with slim black pants and booties. I’ll wear this look a lot this fall.Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life wearing Covered Perfectly

I changed to a longer necklace for this look becauseĀ the proportion looks better with pants. For reference, I am 5’4″ and wearing a medium. Could I squeeze into a small? Sure, but then my bulges would show which is never a good look, in my humble opinion:)

  1. Love this interesting post with the 2 looks. I just bought an Eileen Fisher top in purple similar to this top, but it’s straight. I like the flair of your top. I think I will get this one too. I’m thinking about leggings and tops if it ever cools off. And seeing it with a skirt, maybe i could wear it with a combo skirt legging that i have from Eileen Fisher. Have you ever tried that, it’s a fun item.
Thank you for showing options and accessories, you’ve expanded outlook.

    1. I’ve had my eye on a skirt-legging combo and wondered how much I would like it. I’m going to order them and give them a whirl. Thanks Kathy!!

  2. I don’t wear skirts very often, but I do have several pencil skirts. Most of them I’ve had for years. I also sewed my first one in junior high.

    1. We share that, Elaine! I sewed my first one in Home Economics in 7th grade!

  3. I too love pencil skirts and you look fabulous in this.

  4. Love the top with the skirt:so elegant!Wish I could wear tops like this but I’m small busted and they don’t fit me properly.
Have you thought of doing any blogs that have ideas for clothes and styles for small busted women?I’ve also got narrow shoulders too and have a defined waist and hips and am 5ft 4″.Proportion is always what I am for and you have certainly done that with your pencil skirt.
    Thanks.

    1. I am not well endowed but I do have broad shoulders which helps. Proportion is very important. Tops with pockets, pattern and texture all add visual bulk for balance.

      1. Thanks Jennifer for your reply šŸ™‚

  5. I love the blue. My favorite color and looks like it is favorite for your complexion.

  6. I love that you have shown two different looks with that beautiful top! You look so great in both. And, I am always grateful for tips about hiding muffin top. I would not have thought that was an issue for you so thank you for helping those of us who need help! Never had to deal with that until now … I’m 59 and it’s been a real challenge to dress this changing body of mine! Love your blog!!

    1. Thank you Beth. Even when my weight is lower, I have flesh muffin roll. These days it has more substance. I’m so glad you’re here!

  7. You look great in the pencil skirt without stockings. Very sexy and youthful! Go woman!

  8. I love a pencil skirt! This one is very versatile as it can take you from casual to dressy. Just think of the possibilities around this one skirt when travelling. I would never have thought to pair a tunic top with my pencil skirt but it looks great. You look wonderful in both outfits.

    1. It’s perfect for travel and traveling in! I think the tunic proportion works because of the fit and flare shape. Thanks so much

  9. Debbie Z. says:

You look stunning in this outfit. The vibrant blue is so good on you and your hair looks elegant pulled back like that. The pencil skirt looks really good on you and I love how classic it is but in my case I would prefer it to be a couple inches longer. My calves are fine but my knees- not so much. Alas, not all 50+ women have good legs like you.

    1. Thank you Debbie! I am lucky to have gotten my Mom’s legs:) I like my hair up too. I wish I was more talented at putting it up.

  10. This color is so beautiful on you. The power of a great pencil skirt is just unlimited and women don’t realize how they look good on any shape and size. I have several. You look lovely.

    1. Thanks Pam! You always look fabulous in pencil skirts. So polished and sleek.

  11. I love skirts and have a wardrobe of them. Stretchy ponte skirts, white cotton denim, fit and flare, A- line, linen striped – you name I have it. Having a very hour glass figure, I find trousers tricky, especially around the thighs, so skirts are a great compromise. Like you, my legs are bare in summer and I wear flats/sandals and in winter, tights/boots. You have great legs and look very smart with the blue top.

    1. Good for you Susan! Many women routinely choose pants over skirts but I think they’re missing the ease of wearing skirts. Comfort and easy polish, always lady like. Thank you. I’m fortunate to have nice calves.

  12. You are so truthful and we appreciate it! I have muffin top but wasn’t sure how to handle, so thank you for your guidance here.

    1. Happy to be real here Loretta! No point in not being honest. Loose waistbands are more comfy too! You can still tuck things in, but blouse them over the waistband a bit.

  13. I haven worn pencil skirts off and on since I was 12! Always a good choice!

    1. I agree Linda! I sewed my first one in Home Ec when I was 12 too!
