Monthly Style Guide for Women Over 50

Welcome to the new First Friday event for women over fifty. Pamela Lutrell of Over 50 Feeling 40 and I will bring you, all the amazing women over fifty, our best style guide to kick off a new month. It’s all about confidence, ladies, so look for us on the First Friday to bring you our best style tip for a month of great, head-turning style.

We drag it with us everywhere and reach into it multiple times a day.  It holds all our important stuff and makes a huge statement about our style. It’s our purse. May is the perfect time to switch out or update your handbag.

I’m not sure how old I was when I started using a handbag but I still remember the one I carried during high school. It was tan leather and matched my Frye boots 🙂 Back in my college years, I remember changing my handbag every day, to match my outfit. Apparently I had time between studies to worry about that.

I don’t buy handbags often and keep them for many years. I still have and use ones I purchased 40 years ago! They’ve become vintage along with me.

Your style guide for May includes an updated handbag.

Here’s a few of the handbags I’ve worn this year. Obviously I love animal print and texture…they’re timeless!

My philosophy has always been to invest in unique fabrications, shapes or details, but stay as close to classic as possible. That ensures my bags will be wearable 40 years after I buy them.

I have my eye on the new saddlebag shapes this spring. I prefer not to wear them as a cross-body but love being able to, when I want to be hands free. I love using a clutch that I can toss into a tote for daytime when I need to carry more.

Check your closets, see what looks new again for you. Remember your cobbler can work miracles on scuffs and scratches. I’ve had many bags brought back from shabby by my shoe repair man.

Now lets pop over to Pam at Over 50 Feeling 40 and see what her May style tip is.

Great idea! I need a new spring bag…but I carry much larger ones than you do…though yours always look stylish and fun!

I’m working hard to scale them down! I used to choose bags large enough to carry my knitting. My neck is paying the price for that now:(

Great idea to take bags to the local cobbler to give them new life. I have a huge tote of bags from over the years and some need a little refresh. Your bags are fabulous.

Thanks Beth. The cobbler can work miracles and make most bags look brand new!

Great round-up of bags! Is there anything more personal than a handbag? Right up there with bras as the one item I and I alone could ever pick out. Currently I’m carrying a vintage Michael Clo saddlebag I bought in France in 1984. I attached a fun tassel clump to it and it’s fresh all over again!

I agree. It’s such a personal choice. My husband has bought me a few over the years and they’ve never been quite what I’d choose. Your current one sounds awesome.

I love the saddle bags as well. Because I was a professional journalist/photographer for so many years, I carried a large camera bag that held all my camera gear, a tape recorder and a place for my driver’s licence, keys and lipstick. It’s only been recently I’ve started buying bags, and they’re all small.

I didn’t know you were a photo journalist! You’ve had the most interesting life Brenda. I used to carry much larger bags. Now I prefer small ones.

I love the round straw bag you styled a c while back. Thanks for sharing. I should have kept some of my old purses.

That round one is a favorite! There’s a few bags I got rid of, that I regret losing. Accessories are usually worth hanging onto in my opinion.

I wear my handbags out. Some have had their zippers replaced by a man who repairs goalie pads for hockey. My handbags take just about as much abuse. Then they retire to handbag heaven.

You crack me up! I’ve retired plenty of bags to “handbag heaven”. Perfect analogy.

Love all your bags! I’m drawn to the saddle bag style this year too. I don’t have a lot of bags, but like to change them out about once a month. Hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend!

They’ve become vintage just like me? I love that. And I love the funky little round basket one. My mother gave me two of her little bags – one navy blue with a scalloped fold over top and one brown leather. Both so sweet and 1950/60s era. They’re a treasure.

You’re so lucky to have those. I don’t know what happened to all my Mom’s and Granny’s handbags but I wasn’t lucky enough to get one.

I love your unique, yet classic handbags! Fabulous pieces!

I only started getting into bags recently. I bought a rose colored bag a few months ago; it’s a color I absolutely love but can’t really wear as it washes me out. So a bag is perfect. Also, rose is a very popular color right now, but I know I’ll enjoy carrying the bag for many years to come since I have always loved the color…

    Happy Weekend!

That’s the perfect way to enjoy your color. Plus you’ll see it more often than you’ll see your garments!!
      Happy Mother’s Day!

So pretty! Fun textures, patterns and shapes. Fresh for spring and still time to do a last-minute Mother’s Day gift!

Pretty. I just picked up a Mansur Gabriel bucket bag with a red lining, which was my first new bag in forever. It hold everything and I’ve received a million compliments on it.

Cool article on bags. In the last few months, I have bought 4 darling vintage bags from vendors on ETSY. They range in price from $18 to $50. There is a treasure trove of such bags to be found on Etsy. I highly recommend them. Just yesterday, I ordered two vintage necklaces, also from Etsy. IF you have not searched there, you are in for a treat/

Any ideas for a bag for shopping trips (hands free)
I am only 5’1″ and small boned so larger bags can easily overwhelm my shape plus encourage me to overfill them which is bad for my neck and shoulder.

Many women make the mistake of choosing a bag that’s too large for their frame. Cross body bags are great options for hand free and put less stress on your neck because it’s balanced across your chest. Look for a bag no wider than 9 – 9 1/2 “. I am also a fan of waist packs. I have a small leather one that carries my credit cards, lipstick and some money. It’s not practical for every day, but perfect for shopping trips.
