How to Wear Lantern Pants

Happy Monday, ladies. Today’s Look of The week is by request. I’m sharing how I style lantern-legged pants. What’s that, you ask? They’re typically pull-on pants with a wide full leg and seam accents below the knee. The hem is narrower than the leg, but they’re not harem pants.Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled life wearing lantern pants

You first saw me wearing them here. A black and white outfit with a red bag and French Kande. Today I’m wearing another black and white outfit with a different red bag and French Kande jewelry. I purchased both pairs of lantern pants at boutiques and have no link for them.

Am I repeating myĀ look? You bet! I like to duplicate looks that workĀ for me because there’s no reason to reinvent the wheel. Today’s pants areĀ a differentĀ fabric andĀ drape more. I’m wearingĀ boots rather than sandals andĀ velvet rather thanĀ cotton.

If you Google lantern pants, you’ll find leg variations all the way up to MC Hammer pants! Some are cropped, and many are made of knit fabric. I prefer mine close to or at my ankle to elongate my leg.

I got these boots on sale several weeks ago and love them!! They have a low heel in a modern triangle shape.

Iā€™ve seen them worn with tunic tops, but it’s not a great look on me. I balance a wide bottom with a slimmer top and vice versa. Artful Home always carries several versions. Eileen Fisher includes them in her collections most seasons. I’m beginning to see linen versions for summer and thinking a colored pair would make a fun addition to my wardrobe.

  1. The pants look great on you! I on the other hand think I’m much too short for them but I’m never saying never.

  2. Charlotte says:

Hello…you look terrific! But I think the pants are too long…the Lantern part of pants gets lost. What if you showed an inch or so of ankle?

    1. You are correct. This pair though, is closer to balloon leg pants and my short legs make the look tough to get right.

  3. You look adorable! This look suits you very well. At 5′ and a bit broad of beam I would look like a……lantern!!!! I think this works on a narrower hip and longer leg than I possess. Even a very tiny 5′ would look overwhelmed. I’ll stick to my skinnies and straight leg trousers but variety is the spice of life so keep kick in’ it up!!
Though I might adopt that upper half look;)

    1. I am much narrower on the bottom than top. I think that helps a lot.

  4. I’m not familiar with this style. I’m not sure I can pull them off since I have the opposite shape to you but I’d try them on anyway. Following your posts has given me the inspiration and motivation to try new things. Thank you!

    1. Dressing should be fun so I love to experiment. Thanks for reading!

  5. Julie,Melbourne,Australia says:

I like the lantern pants on you. They look great with the jacket and some heels.
I remember loving the MC Hammer pants back in the day as they were so comfy and fun.I’d like to try on some lantern pants and see how they look on me…….nothing ventured nothing gained. Were yours a petite style?

  6. Rita Loehr says:

Love this look on you! I learned something new today……..lantern pants! Always a good thing to learn something new! Did you have to hem them, were they petite or a perfect fit!

    1. I did not hem them. They tend to run short so perfect for me:)

  7. Donna B Oliphint says:

Hmmmm…not loving these on you, though I’m sure they’re comfortable. Just think they give your petite body an X shape rather than the longer V shape. But then, that’s why there’s chocolate and vanilla ice cream. (As well as strawberry and pistachio!) Love your sense of adventure with clothing!

    1. With my broad shoulders I try to balance the v shape. Variety is fun to try. Have a great day Donna

  8. Kathleen O'Brien says:

Can’t touch this! Love MC Hammer – although I think of his pants as much more baggy.
I have a few lantern pants, black by Eileen Fisher and a couple of patterned pair by Alembika. I’m with you on wearing a more body conscience top with the fuller bottoms. I think they are fun to wear and wear mine when I feel fun and funky. I often pair them with a platform-y type sandal or shoe.

    1. I have an Alembika pair too! Love the idea of a platform with them. Thanks Kathleen

  9. I’ve been eyeing pants in this style, so now I’ll try them out. So enjoy having different styles to choose from to fit my different moods lol Life is too short to be boring!

  10. I think they would be fun in linen. Sometimes out on the boat, the breeze is a little chilly so a light linen pant is perfect. The magic in wearing these pants is keeping the top fitted. You wear this look well, Jennifer.

This post reminds me that I have Eileen Fisher lantern pants. Now I know how to style them. Thanks. I think you look chic. patval

  13. Well, why the heck not! Looks great.

What a great look for you!!!

    1. Thank you Beth. Itā€™s a tough look to pull off but with the right portion on top I feel very comfy in it.

    1. Theyā€™re not for everyone but some women love this shape. It took me a few passes to realize I like the silhouette too.

  15. You styled these pants perfectly! I really like this look! I also always have to balance out a wider pant with a narrower top.

    Have a great week!

  16. I really like the jacket and top…If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all…smile…

    1. Youā€™re a class act Deede ;)Theyā€™re not for everyone. Have a great day!

      1. Jennifer, My lack of enthusiasm for the pants was in no way a criticism of you..Those pants IMO just don’t make the female form regardless of size look good…You look wonderful…as you usually do…

      2. I know that Deede. Thatā€™s why I said youā€™re a class act all the way! xo

  17. How are these different from palazzo pants?

  18. I just do not like this style of pant I would never wear them. Jacket and shirt are nice on you.
