Look of the Week- Gray…The Softer Neutral

Happy Thanksgiving to all my Canadian friends and family! This fall I am switching up how I wear my neutrals and which ones are taking center stage. I will always own and wear plenty of black because it travels well, doesn’t show dirt, coordinates with most everything and always feels stylish…but it’s not myĀ first go-to for a neutral these days.

Gray is having a resurgence this season and I’m thrilled. It’s showing up in clothing and accessories so I am stocking up in all ofĀ its intensities.

Gray is available in shades pale enough to look almostĀ white and deep enough to look black which allows it to substitute for black in many instances. It’s easier on my softening complexion than black so requires less makeup to pull off.

I seldom gravitate to moto-inspired footwear because my feet are large for my height and I don’t like to make them appear any bigger than they are. It was the gray suede that enticed me but the lacing detail and deep V sides that sold me on them…plus they are very comfy. I am wearing them with no show peds under cutout booties from Nordstrom

The deep V sides shorten the visualĀ length of the bootie which suits me fine. These type booties look best with a skinny leg so the boot detail shows. These are the

There are obviouslyĀ times when I need a handbag so I have my eye out for a gray one. 1. I love grey and really love it with this blue…I usually wear it with black. This blue is beautiful with the soft grey. Thanks for the inspiration Jennifer!

  2. I love this look on you! Gray is beautiful on you. I love the tote, might have to order that one….. I so agree about gray being a great alternative to black. I have been purchasing more gray for my wardrobe. I found a great charcoal gray pantsuit from DKNY that I love. I have silver shoes and gray handbags. I recently found some great no-show socks online from a company called Sheec. There are several styles, and they come in black and nude. I ordered various styles and now have options for different shoes. I really like them as they don’t slip off inside the shoe. Love, love your blog!

  3. Love this outfit on you. Yes gray is showing everywhere and I am pleased. Recenctly I purchase an “eyebrow” gray long cardigan and it looks great over black, navy and gray. Hope I get to wear it though before it snows here.

  4. Grey is trending? Who knew?!

I just bought a grey purse last week. I teamed mine with black booties, as I donā€™t have grey ones. Would a grey purse look good with taupe booties?

Yesterday, I wore my new pull on jeans in a bootcut. I love the long, lean look! But, I find the pull up jeans slide down, so Iā€™m constantly hiking them up. As much as I like the clean front, they are not for me.

I would never have paired mauve with navy but it works. I love a new colour combo.

Happy Thanksgiving! Itā€™s a time to appreciate all that we have – love of a family, good friends and we live in the greatest part of the world Vancouver Island. I might be a little biased. ????

    1. You are lucky Joanna! Gorgeous place to live. Taupe with gray would go well together if they have a similar undertone. Both come with cool and warm tones so check that they coordinate.

  5. Love all this too! What’s your advice on socks with booties? I live in a cold climate so the ankles get too cold for this look.
I am new to your blog and I’m sure enjoying it ????

    1. Welcome Julie! I wear socks with my booties! You could wear fun patterns or stick to neutrals depending on what you want the eye drawn to. Match the pant leg color to lengthen the look of you legs.

  6. Nice color combinations!

  7. I have always loved gray and the lighter versions always look so soft and pretty. I bought some purple sweaters this year in light and dark shades which I also consider neutrals. This is a perfect outfit for a cool Thanksgiving Day!

  8. Love the gray! Itā€™s been my go-to neutral for years, because it goes so well with the blues, greens, and pinks I love. Thanks so much for featuring it. Arenā€™t pull-on jeans the best? No thick hardware and flys on the belly, where we donā€™t need extra bulk.

    1. It also looks great with white and black! Itā€™s a wonderful neutral. So versatile!

  9. I love the boots and the bag! great styling on the boots with the V aspect and the lacing.

  10. Deb Campbell says:

I have always liked grey since you can mix shades easily – a column of charcoal, with a lighter grey over or vice versa. You canā€™t always have as much success with red, blue or purples as you can with grey. Love silver bling with it or some coloured jewels wk as well.
