Fashion on a Budget for Women Over 50: Style Sweet Spot

Fashion on a Budget for Women Over 50: Style Sweet Spot

Great style doesn’t have to be expensive. There are beautifully dressed women who spend little on their clothes and poorly dressed women who spend a small fortune. The trick is buying what fits and flatters your shape, coloring and lifestyle. No amount of money can fix tacky.

Last week Pam and I showed how we would dress for a casual dinner out. This week we’re showing how to dress on a budget.

Style has the power to transform your confidence. Working from the outside in, women can boost their confidence by hitting their Style Sweet Spot. Pam Lutrell and I began this new series to help and inspire those women who are struggling with their appearance. Each week we choose a scenario from our daily lives to show why, what and how we dress to reach our style sweet spot. Your style sweet spot is when you feel confident about your appearance and know you are sending the message you want people to see.

Investment dressing is a great way to keep clothing costs down. The other, is buying more affordable clothing. One of my favorite places to shop for them is Target.

Here is the what and why, I bought at Target this week.

The right scale and color in accessories helps them look more expensive. Affordable fashion for the budget conscious women over 50 is available at all price points. Target Style for Spring 2016

I started with this blouse. It’s a soft, silky feeling fabric. A stiffer fabric would have looked more casual.

Style Tip- The placket covering the buttons makes the blouse more feminine and elegant looking. It’s lack of pattern and neutral color also makes it more elegant.

The earrings are a modern shape and the silver goes well with my cool coloring. I spotted this necklace in the case and loved it. The rustic shape of the faux “stones” make a nice contrast to the silky blouse. The stones are uneven and bumpy which adds texture!

Style Tip- Texture near your face reduces the appearance of texture/wrinkles on your face and neck.

Target has some great styles for the budget conscious woman over 50. Budget need not compromise your fashion choices.

I added boot-cut denim jeans.

Style Tip- Dark wash denim is less casual than lighter washes. White is the exception to this rule.

There are no fraying or worn spots. Don’t get me started on distressed jeans with holes! That trend flatters no one! I topped this with an open, 3/4 length, knit vest.

Style Tip- A 3/4 vest slims your silhouette by obscuring the sides of your body. The choice of a smooth knit, with no details or pattern makes it more versatile and classic.

I love long vests for this reason.  A navy and white striped wristlet carries all I need for lunch out with girlfriends.

A few well placed accessories polish a casual outfit. Great style is available at all price points. This is Target Style for spring 2016.

Some fun sunglasses and I’ve hit my Style Sweet Spot.

Your budget needn’t limit your style options. Great style is available at all price points!

OUTFIT DETAILS: blouse-$22.99, vest-$22.99, jeans-$27.00 = $73.97

I wanted everything in this outfit to come from Target, so I added wristlet-$16.99, earrings-$7.99, necklace-$27.99, shoes-$29.99, sunglasses-$14.99. The entire outfit totalled $173.92.

Now lets pop over to see how Pam is hitting her Style Sweet Spot.

I also wanted to remind you that Pam, Susan and I will discussing fashion for midlife women on a Blab, this Tuesday. We would love you to join us!

This is a great look no matter where it came from. I love the vest…the way you styled the shirt with the tie…and the handbag…and you look amazing. Such a great job.

Jennifer do you wear a camisole over your bra when your blouse is a little sheer like this appears to be. Always a problem for me. Thanks so much, always look forwRd to your posting

I do Judy. But rather than wear a white one, I wear nude (my skin tone nude) so it doesn’t show.

White shirts must be on my radar too because I recently found an Eddie Bauer version in a crisp cotton which I love.
Your look is softer and more feminine with your accessories and the lighter fabric.
I plan to wear several strands of real pearls and turn the collar up.
Your series is very inspiring and lots of fun!
Hope you have a great week!

I can’t wait to see it Leslie. You look stunning in pearls!

I love a bargain with style. You make me want to go try those jeans, the necklace, the blouse & vest – plus your glasses. So cute. I have a computer bag/satchel I got at Target years ago and it’s holding up and still garners a lot of compliments. Good Ole Tar-jay!!

It’s new now! I bought it all Friday! I also have things I bought at Target years ago. The quality is terrific!!

      And affordable 🙂

  11. February 21, 2016 / 2:25 pm

I don’t have many clothes, but the pieces I have are nice, so guess that makes me an investment dresser. I’ll buy one nice piece in the spring and one in the fall. Because they’re quality, I’m still wearing things I bought when I was in my 20s. Whenever I buy something that’s a “bargain,” it quickly loses its shape, or the fabric snags easily. They just don’t holdup well. xoxox, Brenda

Thanks! That texture tip is a winner. Pattern does the same thing if you like wearing it.

Have to disagree with your comments on “distressed denim. I’m 58 and own a few pair of jeans that have minimum ” holeage”. A pair with the right top and accessories can look great.

It certainly is a personal choice Eva. Apparently many, many women agree with you. Thanks for reading.

  16. October 27, 2016 / 1:55 pm

Well done — you look amazing! That necklace is striking.

I do side with Eva on the distressed denim; I like a lightly worn jean for casual occasions. I’d take that over excessive stitched detail any day.
