Dressing Room Diaries: It Just Wasn’t My Style

Sunday I stopped into my local Anthropologie for a small gift and looked for things to try on. After lunch with a girlfriend yesterday, I stopped into a larger Anthropologie and wandered around. I spent a total of 2 1/2 hours walking this major retailer’s store, picking things up and wondering if they would look good on me.

In the end, I never entered the dressing room because nothing looked like me. I loved the lotions and home wares but the clothes were simply not my style.

This is my style.

Comfy, USA Jacket and leopard wrap

Simple shapes in subtle colors with classic patterns.

My wrap has the same shade of aqua as my tank top and necklace. The soft gray of my jacket is repeated in the velvet backing of my wrap.

As I was waiting for the elevator at the end of my failed shopping excursion, a lady asked, “You look terrific, where did you get your outfit?”

A lightbulb went off and I realized as hard as I try, bohemian fashion is just not my style. Anthropologie has the most fabulous selection of boho, creative items for women of ages. They just aren’t for me.

I love unique clothes, which Anthropologie carries, but I prefer a more tailored shape in sleeker fabrics and less pattern. I am overwhelmed by voluminous clothes that show no body shape. Too much pattern feels overdone on me.

The bohemian and creative dresser can find fabulous looks at Anthropologie…it’s just not for me.

Same exact experience for me at Anthropologie. Not my clothing vibe, but the Barr Co. shea butter lotion can’t be topped during a Midwest winter. 🙂

That sounds fabulous! I’ll have a look for that lotion. I love Shea butter.

    I agree with you Jennifer.
I’ve never gotten anything at Anthro, but I know so many women are ga ga over their clothing!!
I’m sure I could find something there but it’s also expensive!! But I do enjoy walking around the store looking at their displays!

It’s not my style either. I even find your jacket a bit on the boho side. Did you step out of your comfort zone when buying it? You do look fabulous.

My jacket is structured with creative touches, but not bohemian. Boho focuses primarily on the free flowing shapes of the 60’s and 70’s. This jacket is perfectly in my comfort zone! I love it! Modern and unique with a creative shape and hemline

It’s not for me, either! I bought a tshirt at my daughter’s urging and after a couple years in the closet, donated it.

On another topic, Jennifer will you be doing the undereye concealer tutorial before the holidays? I would like to look as good as possible for relatives coming in for the week! Thanks!

I’m glad you reminded me about the concealer. I’ll try to put it together in the next week or so!

It’s funny because I love Anthropologie stores, and I can easily spend an hour in one (they have the best couches, and it always feels like a mini getaway!). However, the clothes aren’t for me either! I bought a couple of dresses there that I ended up giving away because they weren’t me. So now when I go into one of their stores it’s always to enjoy the surroundings (and maybe to pick up something for the house or a gift) but not to look at or buy clothes…

Me too!! Their ambience is fabulous but I feel like a fraud in their clothes.

  9. November 4, 2016 / 6:11 am

It sure helps when we know our style, doesn’t it, Jennifer? Many an item in my closet over the years has been off to a donation pile because I didn’t pay attention to what WAS my style or flattering on me. I love perusing Anthropologie’s books and gifts – so much fun. But the clothes? “Not for me” fits for me too.

So true Barbara. I enjoy everything else about their store too!

I agree, I am 5’5″, and smallish, and have fair coloring ,similar to you. I find the clothes overwhelming, and patterns too large, but the fabrics are very nice. I buy books and gifts there, and the sofa is wonderful! I am attracted to the “shabby chic” things, pale bedding, etc.

I love their aprons and candles! It’s such a fun store to visit.

You know I felt the same way the last time I was at Anthro. I couldn’t find a thing. Normally I do not have that problem. I think the chiffony printed things are just not all that flattering on women our age. That Josie Coat is fabulous isn’t it? It is one of the most versatile pieces I own. Love Artful Home!!

Great observation Cindy. Floral chiffon makes me look older than I am. Way older.
