Double Denim: Does This Outfit Need Saving?

Double Denim: Does This Outfit Need Saving?

Happy Tuesday ladies! Life feels like it’s slammed into the fast lane and I don’t expect it to slow down anytime soon. We’re in high gear for our move and packing like mad. Many of my clothes are already sealed in boxes which makes getting dressed an interesting challenge. Today’s post is a little different than usual because I want to hear your opinion.

Over the weekend we had lunch out and here’s what I wore. A simple outfit of double denim but I grabbed the wrong jacket as we headed out the door. I have always thought that wearing matching denim was a mistake, now I’m not so sure.Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life wearing double denim in blue

This is my favorite denim jacket but I intended to grab my black one. It’s a little darker than the jeans but not appreciably so they look the same color. The white shirttail breaks the colors apart but the fact is they are very similar.

SHOP THE LOOK

I added this pleated scarf to tie all the colors together. Then I added these earrings which have quickly become my new favorites. Possibly because they’re white and possibly because they’re lightweight and fun. This bracelet gets worn more times than not these days because it’s easy to wear and comfortable. My little Bee Pin lives on my denim jacket these days and I love it!

JENNIFER CONNOLLY OF A WELL STYLED LIFE WEARIGN DOUBLE DENIM IN BLUE

You will see these shoes on me a lot this spring and summer. I think I shared that my bunion has been acting up lately. Maybe it’s the extra pounds I’m carrying and maybe it’s stress. Whatever the reason I’m not enjoying it.

When I went to do dressing room diaries last week my feet got so sore I had to stop and buy more cushiony ones. I put these on and wore them home. Clarks Palm Glow wedge sandalsI never do that because I’m afraid they’ll rub my feet or bind somewhere. These didn’t and I’ve been wearing them daily since. They have a cushiony sneaker wedge that absorbs shock and is a dream to walk in. I’ll need to find them in another color very soon;)JENNIFER CONNOLLY OF A WELL STYLED LIFE WEARING DOUBLE DENIM

This white shirt has 3/4 sleeves and buttons up the back. Why you would ever unbutton these I have no idea but it fits well and is my favorite no-iron fabric. I never have to touch it with the iron and it always looks crisp.

After it warmed up I removed the jacket and wrapped the scarf around my neck.

So tell me, does this outfit need saving? Would you wear it?

Let me know what you think in the comments and please tell me why or why not.

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Yes ! Save that outfit! I also thought catchy denim was a no no,but the way you wore it with the white shirt etc is great!

I love this outfit on you! I always thought you shouldn’t match your denim but this certainly proves that wrong. Definitely keep it!

I would save it. Loved the scarfe tucked in the shirt brings more colour to your face. We all need to after such a winter!

Save! You look polished and casual and I would wear this after asking myself “would Jennifer wear this?” You look great and I love the shoes!

I can’t go with you on matchy denim. It looks fine, but you usually look better than fine. I think the white shirt with the scarf inside the collar is the best look, stylish and creative. More you!

I actually really like this outfit on you. You have elevated the look with accessories and the white shirt.

Without the jacket it’s a great look! With the jacket…north of 49 we call it a Canadian tuxedo. There’s nothing wrong with it of course but as soon as you removed the jacket the look was elevated. Denim is something that IMHO works best in a hi-lo styling. I would never wear two pieces of denim of the same colour together preferring them to play off something very different. ie jeans with silk or cashmere top, or as you have styled it here with the pretty shirt and scarf. The denim jacket with a dress or linen trousers or black pants etc. A denim jacket in another colour could work.

Agreed. It’s a save! The white shirt showing below the jacket breaks it up as does the scarf. Your little bee & cuff are perfect casual accents. You look terrific! I have those nasty bunions too so I’ll be checking out those shoes!

Funny, I wore this same combination yesterday! I think the key is the shirt worn out so the two denims are not next to each other. I wore a pair of Clark’s in a buff color that I just received from QVC. The style is the same but not that bunion friendly!

You look lovely in anything, Jennifer and allow yourself to dress for the occasion when moving! Yes, all of these pieces are worth saving.

Save you look fantastic, I wish I could dress more like you. I love the black sandals with the jeans as well. And of course your hair looks fabulous. Sometime please do a blog on hair care and styling tips.
    Thanks for being you

I think you look fabulous in this outfit. I always thought you shouldn’t wear matching denim either, but after seeing you in this, I’m going to toss that old “rule” out the window! I didn’t click on the shirt link, but it must be a Chico’s no iron shirt. They always look crisp, even after wearing them all day.

I think the outfit is absolutely stunning and ypur wearing it well, I have a lot of denim jackets and I try to match them up with certain jeans and things, but in the end I always Be on point as they say, lol.

It’s a no for me but you look very put together as always. Love the scarf.

I think you look very polished! The scarf and the untucked white shirt pull everything together so much that I wouldn’t have thought of DD except that was the title of the post. When I pack lightly for a trip with my denim jacket, I always throw in a cardigan to wear with my jeans to avoid the DD. Thanks for the post!

I don’t like the matching denim (Love the Canadian tuxedo comment, Allison!). Only because you asked…but it looks a little tired and frumpy, like you were dashing out the door and just threw it on. It’s a approaching Mom Jeans status. The outfit without the jacket is fabulous though and looks more like elegant you!

Curious about the sandals. How much flex is in the sole? Because of my past broken heel, the doctor said to only wear shoes with no bend in the sole for best support. If they bend too much, my foot aches terribly.

I’m not normally a fan of matching denim. This outfit works, but like others, I like it better without the jacket. The scarf really pops it and the jewelry is nice, too. You always look great.

Off to check out those shoes, as I share your issues with bunions. And like you, I’m not sure if it’s added winter lbs. 🙁

I was crushing on your outfit. A very polished and stylish casual look. Save the outfit by all means; it looked fabulous on you.

    April 11, 2018 / 6:16 am

I like it. As said, the break with the shirttail makes it work. All styles rotate. I think you have just brought back denim+denim. Add a scarf, jewelry, a bit of attitude – it works!

    April 11, 2018 / 6:38 am

You look fab! Definitely save it! It’s funny how things come back around. Years ago we didn’t wear denim on denim. Personally I didn’t see a problem with it. Guess that’s why we need to make our own style, our own fashion. Besides, just who are these people who tell us what is in and what’s not? Follow the money…

I don’t believe there should be any rules when wearing denim. That’s why it is so versatile. What’s wrong with matching? I like the way you pulled this look together.

    April 11, 2018 / 6:40 am

I avoid wearing denim top to bottom, too, but this looks great! Maybe a scarf with more color would give it a little more interest but it’s a keeper 🙂

I love this outfit!! Actually I’m going to recreate it for my self. I ordered the jacket and shoes. I also have a small bunion on one foot and have to be careful when I purchase shoes. Your testimonial for the comfort of these helped in my decision. I already have the scarf and love it. I’m 5’1″ and do look better in fewer colors on my body. Thanks for sharing and keep the outfit.

    April 11, 2018 / 7:18 am

It’s a save! Your longer white shirt bridges the space between your two denim pieces, and helps to make your outfit work perfectly. If your denim jacket were directly on top of your denim pants, I’m not sure it would work as well.
Thank you for continuing to post in the midst of your move. You’re amazing!

I think the matching denim looks very 2000. Would have liked to see one piece be darker or much lighter than the other.

    April 11, 2018 / 7:45 am

The white shirt peeking out below breaks up the denim and I really like the whole outfit, particularly that scarf. I’m a matchy-matchy kinda girl anyway. I wouldn’t like it as much with 2 different shades of blue denim, but a black denim jacket would also work, especially with the sandals in black. I may just have to get those Clark’s sandals for my fussy feet! Super cute and comfy to boot? What’s not to love?

I think you look great – relaxed and breezy. Any fashion choice that is deliberately mocked – like the double denim – is one I always give a serious consideration. I don’t believe in making fun of what people wear when it becomes less of a one off joke and more generalized to the point of people being afraid to try it. And, besides, cyclically, it’s a sign it’s bound to come back into style – mom jeans!

    April 11, 2018 / 7:54 am

I thought matchy denim was a no-no, but you’ve changed my mind! As was mentioned above, I think it works because the jacket and jeans don’t touch and have the separation of the white shirt! It’s a real classic — save it for sure!

I’m going to try out this look!! Thanks, Jennifer!

I love denim jackets and I love jeans. I never wear them together because of “the rule”. Is it “okay” to wear a faded wash with a dark wash?

  32. Val
    April 11, 2018 / 8:09 am

I’m not usually a DD kinda gal but I would wear that outfit in a quick second! Looks great on you, Jennifer! Totally DO NOT agree with “mom jeans” or “frumpy” comments!

  33. Joan Sommerfield
    April 11, 2018 / 8:24 am

This combination is very slenderizing and gives a sense of additional height when wearing the same color top and bottom. All in all a very nice look with and without the jacket. Also , it really brings the eye to your pretty face which should be the focal point of any outfit.

A very elegant person I know stated that people should see you first and what you are wearing second and that fashion was very individual otherwise we are merely clones . Interesting point to ponder .

I absolutely love the entire outfit. The white shirt and the scarf complete the outfit. We can never have enough denim and wrinkle free white shirts.

  36. Patty
    April 11, 2018 / 8:52 am

I love it! The white shirt really does set it off nicely. I could see it with splashes of red too (scarf, shoes, or bag). Perhaps it’s a ‘no-no’ but I like red/white/blue as long as I don’t look like I’m supposed to be in the 4th of July parade 🙂

Would not have intentionally picked it our to war as a matched set but as always you look lovely and accentuate your style.. Love to see something a bit more edgy just to see the contrast but I ALWAYS look forward to your posts and appreciate your style choices . sb

  38. April 11, 2018 / 9:45 am

I think this outfit looks nice, but nothing special. With that black jacket, it would really pop and look chic and sofiticated! I don’t get that feeling with the outfit as it is. You had the chic and sofiticated vibe going again when you removed the jacket and tucked in the scarf. ????

It appears there’s LOTS of feedback on this, Jennifer; doubt you need more; but the scarf tucked into the white shirt is a winner. However, accurate or not, I will share that I read these no-iron shirts are made with a chemical known to cause cancer. (I know, I know, what doesn’t, but one may want to check that out before purchasing one of those gorgeous Chico blouses.)

P.S. I know finding shoes to fit “the bunion” as well as the rest of the foot is difficult; have really been saved by Sketchers!

  40. April 11, 2018 / 10:16 am

Head to toe matching denim is on trend this season and you’re rocking it! The crisp white shirt and scarf set it off perfectly. Good luck with the move!

Agree with others that the black would have been better but you look cute as is. I am sure if the fashion police had been out they would have passed right by! Going to take a look at that shirt…I just purchased one of the Chicos no iron linen shirts. The sales person did say that was relative (no iron linen? ) but it is a beautiful top.

I’m not a fan of double denim for myself. This outfit works on you so I might have to revisit. I do like it better without the jacket – the scarf and the jewelry are nice accessories.
    You look great, as always!
Good luck with that busy moving schedule. Suz from Vancouver

A little torn. Would rather see a very dark denim for either jacket or jeans. But really like the shirt and scarf to break it up.

  44. Katharina
    April 11, 2018 / 1:26 pm

I love the whole outfit and think it’s casual and looks like you care about looking nice without going full on “outfitty”. I do like the denim in the same tones and I agree the white blouse breaks it up nicely so the 2 denims are not touching. The pretty scarf is a nice touch.

Sorry to say though I personally am not a fan of the shoes. For some reason my eye kept being drawn to them more than the rest of the outfit..Maybe its the strong black and white that overtakes the softer feel of it. I have a thing about shoes. I love them and used to be able to wear any style and walk out the door.

Now, I too, have foot health issues and it seems everything hurts my feet somehow. I often feel like my shoes don’t go with my outfit that well and they don’t go with my fun or sexy attitude either. If its comfortable, my feet feel frumpy it seems, I am always looking to the beautiful women over a certain age and checking out their shoes.

I love the outfit. The same color denim creates a nice column of color. I would wear it without hesitation.

“They” keep coming up with the don’t/do rules every few years. Enough already! I have been wearing variations of it since the 70s and will continue to. Btw, it is also called the Canadian tuxedo and is the norm for many of us up here. ????

You look great in this outfit. If it looks good and you feel comfortable in it, break the rules and wear it anyway.

    April 11, 2018 / 8:34 pm

I think the your denim outfit totally works because of the white shirt beneath the jacket. You look great. And I loved the scarf so much, I just bought it! I am nuts for anything blue and that scarf will add to so many of my outfits. Thank you!

  49. Joanna
    April 11, 2018 / 9:28 pm

I’m not a fan of matching denim. Not because we are told it’s a no-no but because it just doesn’t sing. I think the black jacket would have carried the eye from your top to bottom. You do look cute though.
Love, love your earrings, too! They’re fun & flirty!
You mentioned packing, so you must have found a rental that will accept Lucy. And rightfully so!

I like the outfit but I think if you switched to a red or coral scarf it would detract from nonmatching blues.
