Donate a Bra, Change a Life

I donate a lot of garments to charitable foundations. Do you? I seldom donate bras and I don’t know why. It turns out that bras are the least donated clothing item for women, yet one of the most needed! It’s shocking to realize that one in four women will be the victim of domestic violence in her lifetime.

Survivors of domestic violence frequently arrive at shelters with only the clothes on their back. They rely on donated items to help them get back on their feet and this is where we come in.

In July 2010, Soma set out on a mission to make a difference by collecting new and gently wornĀ brasĀ toĀ donateĀ to victims of domestic violence. You can read more about this important program here.

In partnership with the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV), the leading voice for survivors of domestic violence, and their 2,000 shelter programs across the United States, theĀ brasĀ collected are distributed to women in need in local communities. This program runs from January 24 – February 27.

I am proud to partner with Soma to help spread the word about this important program. They offered to give me two bras, one to keep and one to donate if I would share this program with you. I am donating both bras because I’m blessed to be able to afford my own, many women can not.

Won’t you please consider making a bra donation today? Surely there a few in your top drawer that could help a woman in need.

Thanks for reading and have a wonderful day.

    1. I agree! A company with a great mission.

  3. I love when women coordinate to do things that will actually help other women. We need to “do” rather than just complain. Close to my heart is the Rescue Mission and the Lighthouse program in Ventura County which helps women addicts get back on their feet. Thank you for posting this information, I will spread the word.

    1. I do too, Joyce! Thanks for sharing about the Rescue Mission. Helping other women is good for the soul.

  5. Loved seeing this post today! Just this past Saturday, I took 3 bras to the Soma in Fayette Mall in Lexington, Kentucky and then saved $20.00 on two new bras as a thank-you. The ladies at Soma told me my donation would stay right there in Lexington, to be donated to the shelter for women who suffer domestic abuse. This is simply a BEAUTIFUL program, and an excellent example of women helping women. Girl Power!! It’s AWESOME!!

    1. Way to go, Cathy! You’re way ahead of me. Thanks for sharing more info. I love that the donation stays to help local women!

  7. What a wonderful program. I know all too well how easy it is to get pulled into an abusive relationship (thank God we were not married and I still had my own money and could get away.) Thank you for sharing it. xo

Love your blog!!!! Im involved with a monthly clothing giveaway, in a small town in southern middle Tn. Yes, bras are one item that the ladies always take. Due to their economic situation they find themselves in, are not able to afford these items! Thanks for the info about the Soma program!!

    1. Thanks, Carol! I was excited to hear about the Soma program and knew women would want to know how they can help. Have a great day and thanks for reading.

  10. Wow, thanks for this information. I donated all my office clothes to a women’s shelter when I started working from home. But not bras. Eyes opened.
I also donate eyeglasses (at opticians). My prescription is extremely strong, and it must be useful to get some like that in the mix.
Another donation–hair. Must be at least 8 inches long and not colored. It goes to make free wigs for cancer patients. Pantene is one that does this.

    1. Thanks for the info on the Pantene program! I know many women will donate when they understand what is needed.

  11. What a great program. I love Soma anyway – and now even more. Thanks for sharing the word.
