Beating the Heat in Style: What I Wore

Beating the Heat in Style: What I Wore

Our temps have been hovering in the high 90’s for the past week and wearing much of anything is a challenge. It’s too hot to stay outside for long but we had an outdoor event last weekend and I had to wear something. Our air is smokey and stagnant from the huge wildfires raging north of us which makes the heat feel even more oppressive. Hot weather dressing screams out for soft pale colors or vibrant upbeat ones…I opted for vibrant.

I wear very few prints but this one grabbed me last week so I decided to work it into my style recipe. I need more cool things to cover my arms and in hot weather, kimono’s fit the bill perfectly. Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life modeling kimono from Anthropologie

Kimono’s float away from the body so allow lots of air flow which is critical in the heat. They are seldom in solid colors which is part of their charm and meant I needed to step out of my comfort zone to make it feel like me.Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life modeling kimono from Anthropologie I wore a simple black cotton tank and beige linen pants to anchor the look. These are neutral classics which play nicely with most other items and allowed me to add more color and pattern without feeling overwhelmed.

It was too hot for a necklace so I wore these pearl earrings and a statement bracelet. These earrings have quickly become my favorite this summer because they’re a modern simple shape and go with everything.

I wanted to balance the colorful kimono so added some fun shoes and a bright handbag. These help the eye move up and down the silhouette and created balance. Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life modeling kimono from Anthropologie

The outfit was a success. It was cool and felt enough like me to be comfortable. I’ll be looking for more kimono’s because they’re a great option in hot weather. Kaftans are also on my list but they may be a bigger stretch for my style recipe.

What are your go-to pieces for beating the heat in style?

Thanks for reading ladies and have a great day!

Although I love your outfit, especially the kimono, I would die in our heat if I wore trousers. My go to outfit for the heat, is a dress and even though my arms have seen better days, will wear sleeveless. Feeling cool trumps vanity.

I find linen pants very cool but know what you mean. Dresses are very breezy

I completely agree with Susan. I have a nice collection of summer knit dresses. Some are sleeveless. Some are short sleeved. Long pants and anything with long sleeves (no matter what type of material) are not something I would wear. I live in Chicagoland and we have hot, humid summers here.

I am blessed with dry heat here luckily. I really struggle in humidity so feel for you.

My hot & steamy weather attire varies. Natural fibers are a must with linen and cotton leading the pack (I love silk too but don’t care for sweat stains on my blouses). Loose fitting pants & tops or dresses (maxi to mini). I love kimonos and own several but have never worn them. I put them on but invariably remove them. I’m hoping to change that with my new kimono which is black with splashes of a white and chartreuse floral design.

Love your look here, especially those sandals! However, there’s no way that I can wear pants in hot and humid NC summers. I stick to dresses with short or no sleeves. No toppers. I spice things up with jewelry or sandals.

You look beautiful! The kimono, purse, and shoes all play great with the comfortable linen pants and simple tank top. I have similar earrings and yes, they are so versatile, especially when traveling and I don’t want to pack much jewelry.
Thanks for sharing this well thought out look today!

Thanks Jayne! Jewelry does take up a surprising amount of space while traveling. These are so great I’ve been eyeing the gray pearl version for winter.

Love your outfit but it would be too uncomfortable for me to wear in the heat. Here in Ontario we are having a hot, humid summer & my collection of summer dresses is my go to uniform. Some days I wear a kimono because I am self conscious of my arms, but sometimes I just bite the bullet & go sleeveless.

Humidity is a beast. It’s been a rough summer everywhere. I totally agree about biting the bullet when it’s too hot. I do it often.

Good morning, Jennifer. That outfit is fabulous and looks absolutely perfect on you! I recently bought a kimono and can’t wait to wear it but will wait because our summer weather here in Québec has been hot and steamy… dresses and bare arms for me lol
    Kudos for those shoes!

Thanks Leona. They’re not for long days standing on my feet but perfect for lunch out or a party.

My response seems to be in the minority, but I have to grin when one writes about the hot and humid weather in Chicago. I live in Louisiana and we wrote the book on hot and humid. I don’t wear dresses anymore because I am almost 74 and my legs have seen better days. My arms, although in pretty good shape for my age, still have crepey skin that just isn’t pretty. Therefore, I also wear nice comfortable pants but mostly crops and tops with short or 3/4 sleeves when going out for a casual event. Unless held outside, most all events here will have air conditioning. My shoulders and neck are my greatest feature so wear open neck tops and sandals on my pedicured feet. I love the kimono and those shoes are the perfect compliment. Nice look, even for the south.

Thanks Elizabeth. It was a real change for me but I like the look. I’m quite comfy in linen pants here but am also blessed with dry weather. The crepey skin struggle is real and getting more so every year. I moisturize constantly but that doesn’t do it.

At a recent manicure, the spa techician recommended using a moisturizing oil on exfoliated skin. She said that the oil absorbs better and works better than just a moisturizing cream or lotion. Bought some of the Elemis oil and am going to give it a try. She used a sea salt scrub to exfoliate prior to the oil. Also said using the oil out of the shower was a good idea… on heels, cuticles, body, etc…

Cotton dresses, rope espridilles, a wicker basket bag, hat, and sunglasses, are my go to. I like a loose shirt dress style, or I tie a light cotton shirt over sleeveless dresses. Polyester is too hot for me, not sure why the stores carry so much, it’s a long warm season here.

Why do they carry so much polyester in the stores here? Someone must be wearing it 🙂

  12. August 8, 2018 / 7:51 am

As many others have written, no pants for me in the summer. The only time I wear them is on a long flight, since that’s the only time I might be too cold! I prefer dresses and skirts and tops, loose and comfortable. I came back from the South of France a couple of weeks ago with a shopping list to fill before my next trip (I’m too tall to shop there!) – a loose linen dress and a cool black pencil skirt. Most of the tops I had with me looked best with the black or white capris I had with me, but what I saw on femmes of a certain age in the street was loose linen dresses, and skirts or long pants (not capris or shorts) with tops. Lots of jeans in the 90 degree heat! Not for me!! So I’m doing some quick shopping before returning next week, with a slightly different wardrobe 😉 A good excuse to shop, no?

I love your look here. The bag and shoes really tie in with the kimono. I wear dresses or ankle length pants, all in natural fabrics, to stay cool. Like you, we’re blessed with low humidity (on Vancouver Island).

I’ve always got to cover the arms even in the heat! This kimono seems perfect for that. I have a couple of kimono tops that I also wear. I really am not a fan of summer nor heat. It’s always a so hard for me to dress for this weather. I do have a couple of go-to loose longish dresses with sleeves that I wear when the heat’s just unbearable for me. I also have a tank dress that I wear a kimono with for a more dressed but hot occasion.

Why do they not design more dresses with sleeves? I wish they would listen to the needs of women over 50

Sheer kimonos are how I beat the heat here in the foothills of No. California. Everyone thinks it must be cooler here because we are only an hour from the Sierras, but it’s called the thermalands for a reason! I just wore an older Chicos navy floral print with navy capris and received so many compliments. I think I need to add a brighter one after seeing yours. It is fabulous. I’ve had my eye on those sandals too!

The thermalands go from Rocklin and Roseville up to Marysville and Yuba City. I guess it was great for farming and the orchards around here…but now we have to survive in it too!

This is such a fun look! It’s actually how I dress most of the time in the summer. Pants that don’t cling or constrict mean that I don’t have to apply sunblock to bare legs, which is sticky and expensive. Lightweight layers provide coverage and sun protection.

The smoke ftom forest fires combined with intense heat makes for exhausting , uncomfortable days and nights. I take a little liberty with cheerful colors and kimonos. Why not?

That outfit is so chic and flattering on you, Jennifer. Our temps have been soaring in the hundreds plus since late June, so finding outfits that are cool and yet stylish have been quite a challenge. Our July, by the way, has been the second hottest on record since July 1909!

I too love kimonos but wish they were available in solid colors. I love the handbag….I’m curious about your thoughts on wallets. I’m always looking for a good one that I can put into a small purse if I’m carrying one but will keep my “stuff” well organized and allow easy access. I think your sandals are adorable! Really cute outfit…but I’m ready for fall!

I have a large wallet which is a challenge to get into small purses and have just decided to switch it up to a Taxi wallet. I have 2 from when we had a house in Canada and I needed to carry 2 wallets all the time.
