Rituals for Unwinding

Rituals for Unwinding

How do you unwind? Relaxation is becoming increasingly important to me as I consider stress’ impact on my health. I struggle with high blood pressure and take medication to control it. That does keep it in check but I also use holistic practices to help reprogram my type AA personality.

Here are a few things I do to unwind.

  • I stopped watching the news at the suggestion of Dr. Andrew Weil in this book and I have never regretted the decision. If something enormous happens, someone will tell me, but otherwise, I don’t need to know. Most local news is simply crime reporting which I find depressing and sad. If I need to know world events I can get a quick update from the internet.

  • I buy fresh flowers for myself each week because having beauty around me is relaxing.

  • I’ve just rediscovered the joy of immersing myself in a fun novel. My latest are by Fiona Davis. I just finished The Address and loved it! It’s historical fiction about the famous Dakota in New York City. I dreaded coming to the end so quickly ordered The Dollhouse which is about the glamorous Barbizon Hotel for women, set in the 1950’s and present day. I like her writing so much I just bought her latest book, The Masterpiece, which is about Grand Central Station in the 1920’s and 1070’s. Sadly, those are the only 3 books she’s written so I am open for suggestions:)Dollhouse by Fiona Davis on A Well Styled Life

  • I am writing in a gratitude journal each morning, taking time to meditate and diffusing essential oils.

  • My newest ritual has been to get up before the sun, light a candle and sit quietly enjoying my tea. There’s something very soothing about watching the world wake up. I like how it sets the mood for my day and find it helps me be more productive.starbucks mug and Sanari candle on A Well Styled Life

  • I burn candles. Most evenings you’ll find candles burning on my mantle, coffee table, and end table. I find them soothing plus everything looks better by candlelight.

I recently found what may be the healthiest candles around. The owner reached out to me and after I read her story and tried her candles, I wanted to share them with you. This is not a sponsored post.

Rebecca is a breast cancer survivor who stopped burning candles because of their toxins. She missed enjoying the ritual of burning a candle so in 2014 created a safer alternative and started Sanari Candles.

These special candles are made from organic coconut wax and non-GMO soy wax which is sourced from organic farmers who use sustainable sources. It turns out that good old coconut wax is one of the safest waxes to burn, plus its renewable and environmentally friendly.relaxing by candlelight on A Well Styled Life

She mixes in pure essential oils for the full aromatherapy effect. The wick is a wide unbleached cotton which burns cleanly and evenly, creating a triangular glow. The candles are hand-poured into a recycled stemless wine glasses. How’s that for environmentally friendly?

Rebecca has generously offered to give my readers a 25% discount with the code LIFE25 at checkout, which is good until 9/30/18.

She has also generously offered to give away a 16 oz candle to one of my readers. My favorite fragrance so far is this Pompelo which is a blend of Douglas Fir, Chamomile, and Lavender. So soothing!

To win the candle, simply pop over here and see which blend sounds yummiest to you, Then come back and leave it in the comments. I will pick a winner at random.

How do you unwind?

Great topic today! This is a big issue for me and I agree with your strategies. The news is a big problem I struggle with. I have always felt the need to be informed but the last couple of years have been more stressful than ever so I am trying to unplug more often. My job is very stressful and I don’t see a change until retirement so I need to do whatever I can to deal with it.

Try not watching the news for 1 week and see if you miss it. I was delighted to find I never did so didn’t go back to it. If your job is stressful, the last thing you need is to hear distressing news. Happy news is a different thing and there are websites for that!

I like fresco; sounds like what I want my home to be—fresh!
I do many of the things you do to unwind. My grandmother told me years ago as I struggled to read the Italian newspaper while visiting her that the news is the same no matter what period of time it is, and this statement was a result of her many years of life experience.

You have developed some great methods for relaxing, Jennifer! I agree with you that the morning hours are a great time to reflect and be grateful for my many blessings. I enjoy the rituals of my morning, especially now that I am retired! Opening the blinds, pouring my coffee, sitting out on the porch with my pets and watching the day wake up. We live in the country and have our own private lake…so I see Great Blue herons, ducks, geese and right now lots of hummingbirds at the feeders. I call it the Magic Hour because it is so calm and peaceful as the sun comes up. It sets the tone for the day.

My hubby is not fond of scented candles, but the citrus herb collection sounds divine, especially the Persian lime.

The Trentino candle sounds fabulous! I too have been looking for ways to de stress. I know that I wake up exhausted every morning. Hi Jennifer,
Up here in Alberta Canada, getting up before the sun is the norm for half the year! I do like early summer mornings – the crisp, cool air. I sit on my deck, drink tea and knit. Knitting is my stress relief – doing something creative and repetitive is very soothing. I’ve recently taken up yoga, and I find the deep breathing to be very good for re-focussing my mind.
Avoiding the news is a great idea – I try to tune it out as much as possible, however I’m married to a new/sports junkie. So I read while he watches the news – not the perfect solution, but it helps.

Lighting a candle and having a nice cup of mint tea sounds so lovely. I think that I would like to try the Sorbetto; in the depths of winter, the aroma of orange and coconut would be a wonderful reminder of the summer to come.

For me, it would be a toss-up between the Sanam and the Aria. I love floral scents! If I had to choose only one, I would go with Aria, as it has both lavender and some citrus as well. Hi Jennifer, those candles sound delightful. My choice is the Aria. Thanks for sharing your rituals for relaxing. I follow many of the same rituals. Waking up early in the morning is currently not one of them. I may have to start that one once my husband retires as he likes to turn the TV on as soon as he gets up. Me, I like to listen to the kind of music you recommend or simply like it quite. Like you, I will have to escape to a different room. I will check to the library for those books. You are an inspiration. Love your posts.

I’ve always been fascinated by The Dakota since reading Rosemary’s Baby back in the ’70s. I may have to check out that book!

My husband does not like scented candles and I have found they give me a headache after a while. Also I am a bit paranoid about having open flames in the house. I do have several of the battery operated candles, some look very realistic.

I can’t stop watching the news. Never used to pay as much attention, now I can’t stop watching what is going on in our country. Mostly CNN and MSNBC. If I watch even just a few minutes of Fox I can feel my blood pressure rising, so I turn the channel.

I identify with Rebecca’s story, being a survivor of two rounds of breast cancer. My second diagnosis was just after I had passed the five year mark for my first. My husband passed away between so they were very different experiences.
I met such strong and interesting women during this long process. Many, like Rebecca, found their lives moving in a different direction as you realize that life is too precious to not do what you really want every day. Everyone should be grateful each morning to wake up and have another day in this wonderful world.

I like the Pompelo scent. It’s important to enjoy the good things of life while protecting the environment!

Like some of the other comments, hard to choose, they all sound wonderful! Sorbetto, I think, or Biscotti. Can you smell them while they are burning? Some candles smell great in the container, but you cannot even smell them when lit. Thanks!

Love all of your unwinding ideas! I do many of the same ones. Especially reading with a candle burning nearby. I just finished The Masterpiece. You’re going to love it.
I’d really love to have a Bosch candle for this fall and winter. We live in Minnesota and that candle’s smell would be perfect for a late afternoon reading session with my tea (or wine!).

The pompelo sounds wonderful. I am currently doing a long-term sub for a fellow teacher (after 18 mos of retirement) and I will be ready for a trip when I am done at the beginning of October. My husband and I are taking a relaxing RV trip to the mountains and maybe visit Washington, DC since we haven’t been there in 30+ yrs.

Biscotti sounds amazing, especially heading into fall. I had also stopped watching the news in the evening, but have fallen down that rabbit hole again. Hearing you say you’ve stopped has reminded me that I need to also! I love to burn candles every evening and just love the glow and scent my home takes on. I’ve had problems quieting my mind enough to mediate. I need some help in that department! Stress certainly does impact our health and I need to do more to de-stress!

I may try watching the morning wake up with a glass of herbal tea and the ‘Granita’ candle. Please keep sharing ideas knowing that there are people like me who benefit.

I received a beautiful journal from my daughter for my 65th birthday last fall which was made more precious by the messages that she and her children wrote to me in the front pages. It is so special that I’ve hesitated to begin writing in it, but this post has inspired me to start using it as a gratitude journal and to add writing in it to my early morning routine. Thank you, Jennifer!

The candles sound wonderful. My first choice would be Sanam largely because it contains Jasmine, a scent that takes me back to the summer that we spent on the beautiful Pacific island of Saipan.

I’d love to try Granita. Citrus is my favorite. I love the idea of waking up early and enjoying a quiet peaceful morning, BUT I just can’t seem to do it. I need a solid 8 hours and rarely go to bed before midnight.

Like you, I stopped watching the news at night. I found it either disturbing or frustrating, both of which left me feeling anxious at bedtime. I do read our local news though.
I love to read and always have a book by my side. Have you thought of a book club, Jennifer? I belong to one and it is wonderful to be with a group of like minded women discussing a book of choice. It has also lead to some great reads that I might not have picked up.
I hopped on over to the Sanari site. Some many wonderful sounding scents. I particularly liked the sound of the Biscotti & Trentino. They sound yummy for the fall.

The Biscotti sounds like it would be perfect for fall. I need to find more time for myself to unwind and be quiet. Since my natural body rhythm is to be awake late, I simply can’t get up before the sun. So I guess the solution for me is to do any meditating before I go to sleep. This, in conjunction with my normal reading time right before I fall asleep, may benefit my sometimes restless sleep. At this point, I’m open for anything!

Bisco and Bicotti sound nice! I love lighting candles, but seldom do because of all the things I have read about it not being good for us. It is nice to know about this Organic Source of Coconut Oil/Wax. I love rituals! I enjoy a cup of coffee or tea by myself and looking out the window. I use to look out and watch the birds in the big tree on my side porch. Now we live in the desert in Joshua Tree. I look at the clouds and sunsets a lot. In the early morning and evening, there are always bunnies, roadrunners and coyote to view.

Such an interesting post today. Stress is so prevalent in our lives and ultimately can take a huge toll on us psychologically, emotionally and physically. A few years ago I met a wonderful psychiatrist who told me that he had stopped watch, listening or reading the news. Like you he felt that if anything major occurred someone would let him know! He said that collectively we ‘feed’ into the despair, pain and general sadness that we see. We bring the drama into our lives and give birth to it over and over just by just talking about it. His belief was that if we all just stopped watching the world would be a better place! After a bout of depression I followed his advice for several years and actually felt much better. I need to do that again! Meditation also does wonders to alleviate stress as does time in nature or a good sweat sesh with my kettle bells. I confess I also like to play silly games on my tablet to de stress!!

      August 16, 2018 / 9:34 pm

I totally agree with that psychiatrist. People do feed into it and get sucked into a negative vortex. I get ill when that happens so I avoid bad news and negativity.

  113. August 16, 2018 / 8:26 pm

First, I must extend a heart felt congratulations to Rebecca on being a breast cancer survivor.

I, like you, Jennifer, stopped burning candles a few years ago due to the toxic artificial ingredients. The chemical smell of even the “best” candles caused headaches. Sanari candles sound absolutely wonderful. I can imagine the delicious, relaxing scent of the Sorbetto – Blood Orange, Coconut, Vanilla Bean candle filling the air around me.

May you continue to find ways to de-stress and enjoy life!

After a lifetime of reading (not so excellent) students’ papers, I have been spending my retirement reading historical fiction. I might as well learn something while I’m at it, right? Of course novels are not 100% accurate historically, but close enough to keep me interested. The epics written by Edward Rutherford are fun, and I think you might enjoy the “New York” one.
