Double Denim: Does This Outfit Need Saving?

Happy Tuesday ladies! Life feels like it’s slammed into the fast lane and I don’tĀ expect it to slow down anytime soon. We’re in high gear for our move and packing like mad. Many of my clothes are already sealed in boxes which makes getting dressed an interesting challenge. Today’s post is a little different than usual because I want to hear your opinion.

Over the weekend we had lunch out and here’s what I wore. A simple outfit of double denim but I grabbed the wrong jacket as we headed out the door. I have always thought that wearing matching denim was a mistake, now I’m not so sure.Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life wearing double denim in blue

This is my favorite denim jacket but I intended to grab my black one. It’s a little darker than the jeans but not appreciably so they look the same color. The white shirttail breaks the colors apart but the fact is they are very similar.

I added this pleated scarf to tie all the colors together. Then I addedĀ these earringsĀ which have quickly become my new favorites. Possibly because they’re white and possibly because they’re lightweight and fun.Ā This bracelet gets worn more times than not these days because it’s easy to wear and comfortable. My little Bee Pin lives on my denim jacket these days and I love it!

You will see these shoes on me a lot this spring and summer. I think I shared that my bunion has been acting up lately. Maybe it’s the extra pounds I’m carryingĀ and maybe it’s stress. Whatever the reason I’m not enjoying it.

When I went to do dressing room diaries last week my feet got so sore I had to stop and buy more cushiony ones. Clarks Palm Glow wedge sandalsI never do that because I’m afraid they’ll rub my feet or bind somewhere. TheseĀ didn’t and I’ve been wearing them daily since. They have a cushiony sneaker wedge that absorbs shock and is a dream to walk in. I’ll need to find them in another color very soon;)JENNIFER CONNOLLY OF A WELL STYLED LIFE WEARING DOUBLE DENIM

This white shirt has 3/4 sleeves and buttons up the back. Why you would ever unbutton these I have no idea but it fits well and is my favorite no-iron fabric. I never have to touch it with the iron and it always looks crisp.

After it warmed up I removed the jacket and wrapped the scarf aroundĀ my neck.

So tell me, does this outfit need saving? Would you wear it?

I thought matchy denim was a no-no, but you’ve changed my mind! As was mentioned above, I think it works because the jacket and jeans don’t touch and have the separation of the white shirt! It’s a real classic — save it for sure!

I’m going to try out this look!! Thanks, Jennifer!

  2. I think you look great – relaxed and breezy. Any fashion choice that is deliberately mocked – like the double denim – is one I always give a serious consideration. I don’t believe in making fun of what people wear when it becomes less of a one off joke and more generalized to the point of people being afraid to try it. And, besides, cyclically, it’s a sign it’s bound to come back into style – mom jeans!

  3. The white shirt peeking out below breaks up the denim and I really like the whole outfit, particularly that scarf. I’m a matchy-matchy kinda girl anyway. I wouldn’t like it as much with 2 different shades of blue denim, but a black denim jacket would also work, especially with the sandals in black. I may just have to get those Clark’s sandals for my fussy feet! Super cute and comfy to boot? What’s not to love?

I think the matching denim looks very 2000. Would have liked to see one piece be darker or much lighter than the other.

It’s a save! Your longer white shirt bridges the space between your two denim pieces, and helps to make your outfit work perfectly. If your denim jacket were directly on top of your denim pants, I’m not sure it would work as well.
Thank you for continuing to post in the midst of your move. You’re amazing!

I love this outfit!! Actually I’m going to recreate it for my self. I ordered the jacket and shoes. I also have a small bunion on one foot and have to be careful when I purchase shoes. Your testimonial for the comfort of these helped in my decision. I already have the scarf and love it. I’m 5’1″ and do look better in fewer colors on my body. Thanks for sharing and keep the outfit.

  7. I avoid wearing denim top to bottom, too, but this looks great! Maybe a scarf with more color would give it a little more interest but it’s a keeper šŸ™‚

  8. I donā€™t believe there should be any rules when wearing denim. Thatā€™s why it is so versatile.Whatā€™s wrong with matching? I like the way you pulled this look together.

  9. You look fab! Definitely save it! It’s funny how things come back around. Years ago we didn’t wear denim on denim. Personally I didn’t see a problem with it. Guess that’s why we need to make our own style, our own fashion. Besides, just who are these people who tell us what is in and what’s not? Follow the money…

  10. I like it. As said, the break with the shirttail makes it work. All styles rotate. I think you have just brought back denim+denim. Add a scarf, jewelry, a bit of attitude – it works!

  11. I was crushing on your outfit. A very polished and stylish casual look. Save the outfit by all means; it looked fabulous on you.

  12. Iā€™m not normally a fan of matching denim. This outfit works, but like others, I like it better without the jacket. The scarf really pops it and the jewelry is nice, too. You always look great.

Off to check out those shoes, as I share your issues with bunions. And like you, Iā€™m not sure if itā€™s added winter lbs. šŸ™

You look fabulous–even in the midst of a move! You are inspiring me on the moving front in addition to your always great style tips. (We hit the MLS today! Hope we start getting nibbles)

  14. I donā€™t like the matching denim (Love the Canadian tuxedo comment, Allison!). Only because you asked…but it looks a little tired and frumpy, like you were dashing out the door and just threw it on. Itā€™s a approaching Mom Jeans status. The outfit without the jacket is fabulous though and looks more like elegant you!

Curious about the sandals. How much flex is in the sole? Because of my past broken heel, the doctor said to only wear shoes with no bend in the sole for best support. If they bend too much, my foot aches terribly.

  15. I think you look very polished! The scarf and the untucked white shirt pull everything together so much that I wouldnā€™t have thought of DD except that was the title of the post. When I pack lightly for a trip with my denim jacket, I always throw in a cardigan to wear with my jeans to avoid the DD. Thanks for the post!

  16. Cheryl Jensen says:

Itā€™s a no for me but you look very put together as always. Love the scarf.

  17. Evelyn J Amponsah says:

I think the outfit is absolutely stunning and ypur wearing it well, I have a lot of denim jackets and I try to match them up with certain jeans and things, but in the end I always Be on point as they say, lol.

  18. I think you look fabulous in this outfit. I always thought you shouldnā€™t wear matching denim either, but after seeing you in this, Iā€™m going to toss that old ā€œruleā€ out the window! I didnā€™t click on the shirt link, but it must be a Chicoā€™s no iron shirt. They always look crisp, even after wearing them all day.

  19. Save you look fantastic, I wish I could dress more like you. I love the black sandals with the jeans as well. And of course your hair looks fabulous. Sometime please do a blog on hair care and styling tips.
    Thanks for being you

  20. You look lovely in anything, Jennifer and allow yourself to dress for the occasion when moving! Yes, all of these pieces are worth saving.

  21. Katherine Yvonne Weimer says:

Funny, I wore this same combination yesterday! I think the key is the shirt worn out so the two denims are not next to each other. I wore a pair of Clarkā€™s in a buff color that I just received from QVC. The style is the same but not that bunion friendly!

  22. Agreed. Itā€™s a save! The white shirt showing below the jacket breaks it up as does the scarf. Your little bee & cuff are perfect casual accents. You look terrific! I have those nasty bunions too so Iā€™ll be checking out those shoes!

  23. Without the jacket it’s a great look! With the jacket…north of 49 we call it a Canadian tuxedo. There’s nothing wrong with it of course but as soon as you removed the jacket the look was elevated. Denim is something that IMHO works best in a hi-lo styling. I would never wear two pieces of denim of the same colour together preferring them to play off something very different. ie jeans with silk or cashmere top, or as you have styled it here with the pretty shirt and scarf. The denim jacket with a dress or linen trousers or black pants etc. A denim jacket in another colour could work.

    1. Ditto, you wrote it so well I have nothing to add.

  24. I actually really like this outfit on you. You have elevated the look with accessories and the white shirt.

  25. I can’t go with you on matchy denim. It looks fine, but you usually look better than fine. I think the white shirt with the scarf inside the collar is the best look, stylish and creative. More you!

  26. Save! You look polished and casual and I would wear this after asking myself “would Jennifer wear this?” You look great and I love the shoes!

  27. I would save it. Loved the scarfe tucked in the shirt brings more colour to your face. We all need to after such a winter!

  28. I love this outfit on you! I always thought you shouldn’t match your denim but this certainly proves that wrong. Definitely keep it!

  29. Deborah Broughton says:

Yes ! Save that outfit! I also thought catchy denim was a no no,but the way you wore it with the white shirt etc is great!
