Fashion Over 50: Celebrating with Girlfriends

Do you wear pants or dresses more often? Most women I see are in pants during the day. You can count me into that group because I have a hard time finding casual dresses that are effortless and easy to wear. I like wearing dresses because they bypass that all important middle section of my body.

Welcome to this week’s Hit Your Style Sweet Spot, my weekly collaboration with Pamela LutrellĀ from Over 50 Feeling 40.

hit your style sweet spot

You’ve hit your Style Sweet Spot when your appearance is sending the message you intend, and you feel confident that you look your best. Last week we shared how we dumpĀ the frumpy grandmother stereotype. This week we’re showing how we like to dress to celebrate with girlfriends.

When I’m meeting girlfriends for a fun lunch, I like to dress up a bit without looking dressy. A dress always works for that, but casual dresses can be hard to find.Carol Turners Fiore Surplice dress from Artful Home

This Fiore Surplice dress by Carol Turner from Artful HomeĀ fits the bill nicely. It’s sculpted knit fabric is custom-made in Italy, but the garment is made in America.

I love how it hides lumps withoutĀ being bulky. It’s fitted silhouette slims my waist then flowsĀ gentlyĀ into a flared skirt that stops just below my knees. You saw me wear this same special fabric in Carol Turner’sĀ Asymmetrical Tunic, hereĀ and her Basic Tank dress here. Obviously, I adore it!

This steel-blue feels casual to me and is soft on my complexion. I wanted to get totally away from black in this outfit so chose chocolate knee-highĀ boots and a scarf that tied the dress and boots together.

The sleeves are gently flared and bracelet length on me with the same lettuce edging as the hemline. If you are tall, the sleeves would be 3/4 length.

Carol Turner designs clothes for women that are comfortable, sophisticated and easy to wear. This fabric travels like a dream. It comes out of the suitcase looking as fabulous as it did going in.

We finally got rain this week which is a wonderful thing to celebrate in Northern California!

  1. Love the color, love the comfort factor, love the boots, even love the rain which we’ve been getting inundated with here in Oregon the last week.

  2. Love the blue and brown combination. Do you have a source for the boots?

    1. I bought them in a small boutique about 10 years ago…sorry! There is lots of brown around these days so you should be able to find something close!

  3. The price is in the fabric. Quality fabric wears better, drapes better and is more flattering over bulges…
I’m still a Little Black Dress person and if you can find a needle in a haystack…ie a flattering all-purpose LBD, then it is worth the price.
I find I wear 20% of my clothes 80% of the time, so the 20% gets worn to death. In my more mature years, I’ve decided more expensive, flattering “basics” are the way to go, provided they ARE worn as a staple. So you need to be very sure that your purchase transforms you into what you’d like to be and is comfortable to wear with NO fit issues.

    1. Exactly, Kate! I totally agree and couldn’t have said it better myself.

  4. LA CONTESSA says:

LOVELY and in the RAIN TOO!
    EVEN MORE LOVELY!!!!!!!
    WE NEED IT SO BAD!!!!!

    1. I’m so happy to finally see the rain!!

  5. Very expensive clothes from Artful Home. Ithey are way out of the range I would pay for “casual” clothes.

    1. Every woman has a different budget and I like to show my readers a wide range of choices. Being made in America usually increases the cost of things, but it’s worth it to support our workers.

  6. Those earrings are perfect with the dress and boots. Great proportion.

  7. You look fabulous. The dress is all you say it is and more. I love that you opted for brown boots; blue and brown is style smart choice.

    1. I love blue and brown together. Thanks, Rena:)

  8. I do think dresses can be the easiest pieces since you don’t have to worry about tops & bottoms and how they go together!!
The texture on this one is fabulous and since I try to steer away from black too—I love the color!!

    1. Thanks, Susan. We’re getting flooding now so I hope some heads your way. All of CA needs it.

  10. This dress is beautiful!

  11. What a beautiful, easy dress! And I can see where the design is super flattering. You look great!
