Earring Length: What Works for You? Plus a Giveaway!

Earring Length: What Works for You? Plus a Giveaway!

How do you decide which earrings are most flattering on you? I wear earrings almost every day. Short and long both have a place in my jewelry wardrobe so I thought it would be fun to experiment to show what’s most flattering on me and why. Plus there’s a discount code for AWSL readers and a free giveaway!

Diana Ferguson designs a unique line of earrings called, Petals to the Metal. Love that name!

Diana Ferguson Petals to the Metal

They’re handcrafted using high-tech, non-tarnish aluminum, jewelry grade resin and her own hand-patterned paper which gives each petal its design. She creates collections for the season and are available in every color imaginable.

Diana Ferguson Petals to the Metal earrings

Each color comes in 2″, 2,25″ and 2.75″. That doesn’t sound like much difference, but it’s dramatic in earrings.Diana Ferguson Petals to the Metal earrings

Diana graciously sent me all three sizes to see which I liked best. They are such a pretty blue and tinkle quietly when I shake my head.

These earrings are fun, modern and artistic. They’ve quickly become collectibles for women across the country.

Diana Ferguson Petals to the Metal earrings

This is the shortest pair which is 2″ long. They have 2 layers of overlapping “petals” and end halfway between my jawbone and my chin. These are balanced in length and width.

Diana Ferguson Petals to the Metal earrings

This is the 2.25″ pair. It has 3 layers of “petals” and ends almost at chin level. These are her most popular length and work for all occasions.

Diana Ferguson Petals to the Metal earrings

These are the longest at 2.75″ and have 5 layers of petals. They end just past my chin.

This is the best proportion for my face. I have a wide jaw and square chin. This length draws the eye away from the width of my face by elongating it.  You see the gap between the earring and my neck which makes my neck appear narrower.

Now that we know what looks best on me. What about you?

I’m giving away the 2″ or 2.25″ pair to one of my readers.

To win, visit Diana Ferguson here, then come back and tell me in the comments, what other fabulous things you found in her collections.

Diana is generously offering $10 off your purchase from this Petals to the Metal Fall collection here. Enter coupon code AWSL at checkout. The discount is just for this collection and expires November 1, so shop early!

Have a fabulous day!

xo Jennifer

I was thrilled with what I found on her site. I especially liked the variety of earrings, necklaces and pendants. Really liked the inspirational sayings. I may do some Christmas shopping here!

    Thanks so much,

Joanne, thank you so much. Hope to see you around the holidays!

I would LOVE to know what length is right for me! I wear my hair very short, above my ears, wear glasses, and have a narrow face. Any guidelines?

She has beautiful designs. My favorite is the Time Warp #3 Textured Triangle earrings. They are unique. I find it very interesting that she makes earrings in three different lengths.

Diana’s signature cuff caught my eye. Very beautiful.

That is exact the right length. The other 2 draw your eyes directly to your chin line

What a talented lady! I loved her DF cuff in the custom collection and the Prickly Pear and Hummingbird Dangle earrings. My birthday is coming up, must show my husband her website!

I love your blog. I have followed your recommendations often and have purchased several items based on your advice. Happy travels in your RV.

  7. October 18, 2016 / 5:28 am

    How interesting Jennifer!
I never even thought about the proportion of earrings to our face…I only think about it if my hair is up or not!
I looked at Diana’s website! What a talented artist. Did you see her signature cuff? Amazing!!

  8. October 18, 2016 / 5:29 am

I love the Jaguar dangle earrings in the Bestsellers Collection. How fun!

I really enjoy your blog — thanks for the give-away!

I really like the metal dangly earrings. There are so many pretty colors. I also like the tree of life earrings.

I thought that the sheet music dangle earrings would be an interesting choice for me, the wife of a musician. I, too, prefer longer earrings as I have a fuller face with broad cheekbones.

I have a long face so I wear small button type earrings – faux pearl or studs of some kind. Long earrings drag my face down to look longer. Proportion is key. They need to be small and very light for me so as not to pull down the ear lobe.

  12. October 18, 2016 / 6:23 am

Wow, how nice! Diane has been on my radar for years via the world of paper art. I love her work and in addition to her paper earrings, admire the multi-strand pendant cord necklaces and triangle earrings. It was very helpful to see which size earring looks best on you, Jennifer.

Ann it is so fun to see you here! I still gets hits on my website from your fabulous post about me work!

    October 18, 2016 / 7:01 am

I love her pendants and bracelets, too – very lovely and unique jewelry. I love that she uses paper. For myself I’m not sure what length would be best on me…I have a short neck, so I would have thought the middle length, but how the longest pair looks on you is very good and has me thinking – I’ve never tried a longer length like that. Thanks for the chance to win.

My family will tell you that I love anything red, so of course the red dangle earrings caught my attention immediately! Thank you for the giveaway; I’m sure I could work those beautiful blue earrings into my wardrobe as well!

  19. October 18, 2016 / 8:00 am

What lovely pieces Diana Ferguson has! So many gorgeous collections!

I, too, wear earrings every day, and I seem to prefer “drop” rather than “post” earrings. My current favorites are a lightweight leather pair of “leaves”, a shiny on matte, and I have them in both gold and silver. I bought them online from Magnolia Market, owned by Joanna & Chip Gaines of HGTV’s “Fixer Upper” fame. The earrings are about 2 inches long, plus the ear wire. LOVE them! They’re so comfortable and don’t pull on my aging earlobes!

  20. October 18, 2016 / 8:10 am

Diane’s designs are so unique. The chain mail (Patina) line really caught my eye, especially the knot earrings.

I figured out that longer earrings do me no favours. I have a small face and the proportions just don’t look right. The long ones really do suit your face.

  21. Cheryl
    October 18, 2016 / 8:11 am

Beautiful, I love all the different colors and designs on the dangle earrings. I’ve never really considered what length is best for me. I usually wear the shorter lengths though.

  22. October 18, 2016 / 8:14 am

I like the Adorn Collection. Perfect name for the items in the collection.

  23. October 18, 2016 / 8:44 am

Diana here! Thank you Jennifer for this wonderful tutorial on selecting your best earring length. You are so right that only a quarter inch or half inch can make all the difference! I want to mention here that all of my earrings are available with ear wire, post, lever back or clip, to suit your taste. Just leave me a comment in the order section if the option is not yet listed (I’m working on it!) To all who have commented here and/or visited my website, I welcome you! Reach out using the contact button with any questions; I’m happy to help!

I love the Constellation dangle earrings in the Petal to the Metal collection. The blue just pops.

    October 18, 2016 / 9:06 am

I like the Everygirl needs a Jaquar earrings and on a wire dangle. They’re different and I like that.
I think I look best thing in shorter lengths, as my face is slender and my neck long. I believe a longer length just emphasizes that.
Wherever you’re RVing I hope the weather is nice and the leaves magnificent.

I like the Everygirl needs a Jaquar earrings and on a wire dangle. I love that they are different. They would make a great conversation starter too.
I wear shorter lengths as my face is slender and my neck long. I believe the longer length earrings just elongate my face more.
I hope wherever you are RVing the weather is nice and the leaves are glorious.

Lynn, thank you. That bangle is one of my favorites! Diana

    October 18, 2016 / 12:21 pm

I go with practicality rather than aesthetics. Can’t stand earrings long enough to feel them catching on my collar when I move my head. I usually choose 1 inch or less.

This jewelry is lovely. I love the petals most of all, though, her other pieces were great, too. I would want the black and white, my go-to colors!

    • October 18, 2016 / 5:50 pm

Martha, thank you for the compliment. You are not alone — for many of my clients, black and white is their very favorite “color!”

I absolutly love the earrings that you are giving away! But I also liked the chain link bracelet and the tiny earrings. Very nice collection.

  45. October 18, 2016 / 8:26 pm

It IS interesting to see the subtle difference in the different lengths. So pretty in blue – I really like the red petal to the metal earrings on her site – love me a pop of red. Thanks for introducing me to such a lovely, talented artist. Fun – and nice before the holidays for gift ideas.

  46. October 18, 2016 / 10:57 pm

I’m a bangle/cuff girl so there is no question which piece was my favorite – everything is beautiful, however!!

  47. October 18, 2016 / 10:58 pm

I think my favorite earrings I found on her site were the “Blue Snakeskin Dangle Earrings” in her bestsellers category. I am impressed with the range of colors and looks she has created, a very successful product, attractive and versatile. Plus I am always looking for pretty earrings that are not too heavy, and these would be ideal

    • October 19, 2016 / 11:10 am

Hi Alison, loved reading your comments. Hope you will continue to visit my website as I’m always adding new designs and colorways to complement the seasons. Diana

First, what a nice tutorial! Like Ellis, above, I also wonder about wearing earrings when I wear my glasses an d what type is best. I seem to forego my contacts more and more these days, so it’s an increasing concern. I really appreciate how you walk us through these issues!

And thanks for introducing me to Diana Ferguson’s designs. Love them! And I think I’ve found the perfect 65th birthday present for my dear friend who was crazy for The Beatles back when we were in junior high (and is still crazy for Paul — we’ve gone to two of his concerts together in recent years [OK, maybe she isn’t the only one of us who is still crazy about him]) and she also was a band mother for eight years with her two daughters. Yep, I think they will celebrate the importance of music to this fantastic friend!

Thanks to both of you, Jennifer & Diana!

    • October 20, 2016 / 8:15 am

Gail, thank you! I can’t wait to hear what you have in mind! Diana

Thanks for introducing me to Diana Ferguson’s jewelry line. I purchased the deepest depth earrings,
Since she commented it was one of her favorites. I love your blog and being 5’2 I have purchased many of your recommendations from Chicos. If I am a winner of a pair of the earrings, I will give them to my daughter for Christmas, who has the same color eyes as you. The blue is stunning on you!

Absolutely love the mesh earrings in the Silver Essentials #1 and #2 gift sets. Are they sold separately? They remind me of the antique earrings that Jennifer has. Thank you so much for helping me think about what looks best on me and why – although I think all 3 earrings look great on you because the striking color matches your eyes.

    • October 24, 2016 / 7:07 am

Hi Joy Brogan! Yes, the mesh earrings in the silver essentials #1 and #2 gift sets are sold separately. You’ll find them in the Patina Collection on my website! They’re also available in 14k gold filled and 14k rose gold filled. All the best, Diana

I love your style and I adore Diana’s beautifully designed earrings! Petal to the Metal Hummingbirds are my fav, but I also love the open work Ohm posts and the bumblebees. I never knew that earring length could make your neck appear thinner. Now, could you expound more on what will make my waistline appear thinner, too? Thanks again for the inspiration. <3
