Look of the Week: Blue

Sunday we went sailing on a friend’s sailboat in San Francisco Bay. I am a fair weather sailor and prone to seasickness but the day was glorious. Looking back at my pictures, everything was a fabulous shade of blue.

I’ve put on a few pounds lately, can anyone say vacation? So jeans were out of the question, I just wanted to be comfortable.

I wore my Juliet pants from Chico’s. They’re a pull-on, slim legged ponte knit pant that is sleek and comfortable. Their interior elastic waistband never rolls.

Chico's blue handbag and bagles

I wore them with my Keds look-alikes and denim shirt from Target. Yes, I ironed that denim shirt…it’s just how I roll.

We boarded our friends’ boat at a dock in Alameda and headed out to the bay.

Our good friend, the captain, knew my stomach was a challenge, so he suggested I take the wheel to get my sea legs. He’s a brave man because boats are not my strong suit.

At the helm of a sailboat

I’m so short; I had to stand on myĀ tip toes just to see the water in front of us! The moment we were out of the estuary a pro took over so I could put my feet up and enjoy theĀ scenery.

With Treasure Island on our right, we headed under the Oakland Bridge for the bay.

Sailing in San Francisco Bay

I muchĀ prefer having someone who knows what they’re doing at the helm. Enormous container ships were entering the harbor, and they move fast! Tug boats guide them in, but you don’t want to get in their way!

We headed across the famous “slot,” (where winds are strongest) to get behind Angel Island.

Sailboat races were happening in every part of the bay!

Golden Gate Bridge

I was too far away to get a good photo, but trust me…this army of sailboats sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge looked magnificent!

These Juliet pants were incredibly comfortableĀ all day.

It was a fabulous day on the bay.

Do you enjoy sailing?

  1. Looks like so much fun! I’ve seen ads for those Juliet pants and chico’s is one of my favorites – so I appreciate the nod you’ve given them. Ahhh – summertime fun in blue!

  2. Jennifer, I also suffer from any “motion sickness” or should say use to. I found the miracle solution . It’s Ginger! I found “Gin Gin” the travelers candy at Ross & tried it a few years ago . It worked ! I can ride in the back seat of the suburban on trips to Tennessee or anywhere & feel fine as long as I have eaten the candy. I start with a piece about 15 minutes before we start out & then consume around 5 pieces during the 4 hour trip. After Ross quit getting it in I found it online at Swanson vitamins. Give it a try , you’ll be so glad you did !

    1. Thanks, Eva! I hate taking Dramamine because it just puts me to sleep. I’ll get some!

  3. I just realized that the hat I was wearing for walking every day is not shielding me from the sun. I saw my face reflected in a window and gasped. I was wondering what you’re wearing these days when walking in the sun. Also which sunscreen are you using these days? Just ran out of my usual and thought of you. Help.

    Thanks.

    1. I’ve had that shocking discovery too. There you are, thinking you’re protecting yourself and see you’re not!! Lately I’ve been using a sun parasol to walk my dog. It’s cooler than a hat in the brutal heat. We are still cooking in the Bay Area. For my face I use 3 things. I start by moisturizing with Josie Maran which has a SPF 47 then use Elta MD which has an SPF 41. Then I dust my face and neck with Colorscience Sunforgetable powder which has a 50!

  4. Looks like a lovely day for a sail… Your outfit looks perfect for the boat.
On our last trip we encountered a nasty wind and the waves were really terrible. I was quite concerned about our safety and the fact that the weather was not predicted was even more unsettling…I stood up for the entire time because I was so nervous. Thankfully we were only in it for about an hour…one respects the captains abilities when he navigates us safely home to port!

    1. That sounds terrifying, Leslie! I’m definitely a fair weather sailor. Your boat adventures always look so wonderful, but surprises do happen.

  5. Looks like a phenomenal day, and your outfit strikes me as perfect.

    1. I felt quite nautical:) It was a fun day!

    1. Can’t wait to hear the story!!

Sounds and looks like so much fun. We are so blessed to live in this incredible, beautiful area where sailing on the bay is possible. I hav taken the ferry many times from Alameda to San Francisco and I love that. Wish we had ferry service from Fremont to the “city”.

    1. I love taking those ferries too. There are so many beautiful doors to see! They should expand the service area, I agree!

  7. I love your writing and wit. I have a small head, and thin hair – can you tell me what what your were wearing. I know you worry about skin cancer, as do I. It’s hard to find a great sunscreen hat with a strap for a windy boat ride or windy day

    1. Thanks, June. I’m happy you’re here!
It’s a very thick canvas Helen Kaminski from years ago. I had to hold the brim in the very strong wind but it’s quite tight on my head so stays in medium wind. Hats with chin straps work well too but I find they still must be snug around your forehead. My straw hat with the chin strap isn’t tight enough for a windy boat. Tilley makes a great canvas hat for sailing.

  8. My DH is a sailor. I’ve never been a huge fan, although a day like the one you had is great fun. Luckily, our dog loves the boat and they enjoy it together. Great pics!

    1. The dog loves it!! That’s priceless, Laurel:)
