Wrinkled Fun and Linen

I can usually count on the weather cooling off in the evening but not lately. We had our dinner group party over the weekend and I knew we’d be sitting outside so that meant wearing linen. As I lookĀ at the photo’s I see way more wrinkles than I noticed while I was wearing them because I was having the time of my life, plus the only way to keep linen from wrinkling is to leave it on the hanger.

I wore white linen pants with a cotton T-shirt and a black linen cardigan. I would never have worn black in the daytime but with the sun going down, black would feel asĀ cool as white and I liked the black/white combo with pale pink and green accessories.

These are my wrinkles just from sitting in the car!

I wore myĀ newly altered shoes and my feet were very happy. They had a short heel, to begin with, but I used my favorite alteration tip that I shared here, and had my cobbler remove an additional 1/2″ to make them even lower. My feet swell in the heat, so it’s all about comfort.

Our friends have the prettiest backyard. They had festive lights strung everywhere and a fun light effect going on in the pool.

As was our 30+ year custom, weĀ played trivial pursuit for hours (the ladies won, again!), howling long into the night. There was fabulousĀ food, Champagne, way too much desert and the very best company…life long friends who share a treasured history.

I feel incredibly blessed to have these friends and it makes me pause long and hard to think about moving too far away from them. You just don’t remake these kinds of friendships.

Do you have those sort of friends in your life? Leave a comment and share.

You are absolutely right. Friendship takes time to grow and mature and we should never take the years of happy times which we have shared with good friends fore-granted! Your outfit was relaxed but stylish and as always, appropriate for the occasion (which sounded like fun).

  2. Jennifer your outfit looks cool and well pulled together. I love to iron (really I do) and when we had family come to visit from Florida they laughed at me for ironing my linen pants. Took me a long time to learn not to iron linen. Also, Lisa is so right just washed linen looks and feel great.

    1. I like ironing too! There’s something therapeutic about getting wrinkles out but I’m going to skip it for my linen now…or try too:)

  3. I think your outfit looks great! With summer being a more casual season, I think a few wrinkles in linen look totally fine!

    1. Thanks Aimee. In this heat, a few wrinkles are fine with me too!

  4. Life is too short to worry that much about wrinkles. Those who know, know that linen wrinkles and that’s just the way it is. So you could say the cognoscenti know about wrinkles and understand them. I say just live with it and figure if you’re bothered by wrinkles then you don’t know that’s just they way it is.

      1. Such a cool comparison! Love that thought!

  5. It’s funny that you mention this today, Jennifer, as I am wearing a washed, slightly rumpled linen dress. I think that that notion of “crisp” linen is impossible to keep that way, but washing linen and then just gently steaming makes it a fabric which doesn’t instantly wrinkle when wearing. Also, linen gets so soft this way! I learned this when I spelt on linen sheets in Italy that were like sleeping in a cloud.

    1. Linen sheets sound amazing! What a luxury. You’re right, crisp linen only exists on a hanger. Steaming is my favorite way to smooth clothes so I’ll give that a try. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.

  6. Hi Jennifer, We are also in a dinner group that was started 25+ years ago. Amazing that it is the same 5 couples! We have all been there for each other and of course illness, sad events, and parents dying started to happen in our 50’s. These are friendships you can never replace and that is why I tell my husband I wouldn’t want to move too far away when we retire and have to start all over at this age making new friends. As always thanks for your post!

    1. Same with us. We’ve lost one and the original 10, and his widow moved away which shook us all up terribly. I miss Ron so much.

What a wonderful setting for a dinner party. We have a great group of friends also. When we moved we only moved 45 miles away, so we still see them frequently. Best of both worlds, a new home by the ocean and close to our dear friends.

  8. I love linen when it is hot…and we are having a heat wave this week so I will be wearing my new linen dress and straw hat!
That garden looks gorgeous and I want to swim in that pool…

  9. Atonia Walpole says:

I love linen in the summer. I solved the wrinkle problem by wearing mine as washed linen. I don’t iron them and though a crease might appear after sitting for awhile, it’s soon lost in the soft folds of the fabric.

    1. I’m going to try that again, Antonia! It’s really the best solution for linen.

  10. Sounds like a perfect evening…you look gorgeous and not a wrinkle in sight! You wore style and confidence with your smile!
