Women Over 50: Looking Stylish in the Rain

It turns out that Iceland is cool with rain this time of year. At home, I love a classic trench with an umbrella. That won’t work while traveling in a small camper in rural Iceland, so here’s how I’m switching up my look.

Welcome to this week’s Hit Your Style Sweet Spot, my weekly collaboration with Pamela Lutrell from Over 50 Feeling 40!

Style Sweet Spot

You’ve hit your Style Sweet Spot when your appearance is sending the message you intend, and you feel confident that you look your best. Last week Pam and I shared how we dressed to stay cool, This week we’re showing how we dress for the rain.

This is my normal look for rainy days.

This week I’m traveling in some rustic conditions and need a little more utility. I need something windproof and sturdy.

North Face parka and silk scarf

I’ve had this North Face jacket for over 25 years. I love the color and it has great features for rough weather. Rather than an umbrella, I’m relying on a hood.

The hood can be snugged down for wind and rain, and the inner waist tie tightened to prevent drafts. It’s also got an extra long front zipper that can keep the lower part of my face warm and dry.

Honestly, the colors save this jacket from looking horrible on me. Color can be a magic tonic for most clothes. hood and wind flaps down on North face rain jacket

Flattering colors, a smile, and a good attitude will take you a long way.

Now let’s go over and see how Pam hits her Style Sweet Spot in the rain. Something tells me she looks very different than I do.

Have a great week!

  1. The color of your North Face jacket is VERY FLATTERING You just glow. You should wear that color more often. Have a wonderful adventure. Best Birthday wishes too.

  2. A 25 year old jacket? Worth the investment and it looks great for serious wind and rain and even snow!

  3. Hi Jennifer, I love the handbag idea but over here I’d be worried about my bag being grabbed. I suppose because I’m generally walking in urban areas to get to work. I often wear a hooded mac instead of using an umbrella, to have hands also. I admire North Face gear but every time i venture to a store to browse I am put off by its price. Love that blue on you. Very practical too.

    1. My North Face is from an outlet in Berkeley, over 20 years ago, so I certainly got my value out of it :)Yes, I’d worry about my bag in an urban area too. Good point!

  4. Happy Birthday and enjoy your trip! That jacket looks wonderful on you, love the colours!

  5. Happy Birthday, charming, funny, birthday girl! Iceland looks well on you.

    1. Thanks so much Barbara!!

  6. living in the Pacific Northwest, I buy jackets and coats with hoods. We get a lot of rain and I can just pop my hood up until I get into a building and be hands free. My umbrella lives in the car but is rarely used.
I love the colors in your jacket. They’re very flattering to your colouring. You look very relaxed and happy. That’s what a vacation does for one. You’re quite the adventurous one, travelling Iceland in a camper with four people. Looking forward to a post on Iceland with lots of pictures.

    1. We’re having loads of fun but the camper seems to get smaller by the hour. 🙂

  7. Did I miss your Birthday??? The BIG 60? How did I do that??? BTW, 60 is not so bad. Trust me on that. I actually freaked more at turning 30. As always, you look terrific. The hallmark of a truly stylish woman is how she manages to look stunning in less-than-ideal circumstances. I think you’ve got that one covered.

    Have a wonderful Birthday trip!!

Cheers to a very stylish birthday girl,

    Marie-Thérèse
