Style Tip of the Month: Transitioning Your Wardrobe

Fall has been in full swing for months in most of the country and it’s finally here in Northern California. September and October are typicallyĀ sweltering here, so November is our actual change of season. This month I’m sharing how I transition myĀ wardrobe for the new season.

Welcome to your monthly style guide for women over fifty. Pam Lutrell of Over 50 Feeling 40 and I are sharing our best style tips to bring you a month of head-turning style.

Many believe that if you haven’t worn something for a year, you should get rid of it. I don’t. My taste and style areĀ fluid and constantly evolving. I’ve regretted parting with items in the past so I store thingsĀ until I do want to wear them.

That doesn’t mean I’ll hold onto things that are past their prime…those have to go, no matter how much I love them.

I look each piece in the eye and ask, “are you how I want to dress this fall? Is this the message I want my clothes to send…now?”

Do I want to wear subdued colors and simple shapes, or do I want to wear more color and detail? The truth is I’m drawn to more colors and softer shapes this fall.

I try on each item. My size and proportionĀ have shifted since last year, so things that don’t fit are not hung in my closet. I don’t need to see a garment that I can’t wear.

I check sweaters for piling and moth holes. It’s a mystery to me how the little devils get at theĀ sweatersĀ I’ve stored clean, on cedar shelves…but they do!

Finally, I check my shoes, boots, and handbags to see if they need refurbishing at the cobbler.

After I’ve hung the working pieces in my closet, I play with combinations and create outfits so I know what I need to add… to give me the look I want this year.

I’m a different woman than I was last year and IĀ want my appearance to reflect that.

Now let’s pop over to see Pam’s style tip of the month.

  1. LA CONTESSA says:

GOOD JOB………..NO TOSSING HERE if not worn in ONE YEAR!

  2. Up north, we changed our wardrobes over a good month ago. I did much the same routine. I decided to add a little colour this year in the way of sweaters. Normally, I wear basic black or grey with a touch of colour from scarves or purses. I’m upping my game this year!

    1. I’m steering away from roomy h black too. It’s a good thing.

  3. I have been swapping out my summer clothes for Fall and Winter too Jennifer. My choice is to wear subtle shade of black, grey with a smattering of blues…I just posted on my blog this very thing!
Those moths are very naughty…they wiped out my cashmere collection last year and I am not amused!

    1. Those moths are incredibly persistent and have good taste:)

  4. Good tips, Jennifer. I have a hard time parting with old clothes yet I like to add new. I don’t have the space to evolve so your suggestion of taking a hard look in the mirror is a good rule of thumb. I love the layered look you’re wearing here!

  5. Hello,

I like the cream shirt with ruffles and the best. Would you mind sharing where you purchased them ?

    1. It’s from Chico’s this season. I am not a ruffle person but loved this one.
