Covering Your Undereye Circles

Last month I modeled for the Covered Perfectly photo shoot. It was eye-opening in many ways. This makeup artist wasĀ a true professional!

I learned I’ve been covering my undereye circles all wrong.

I always added a touch of concealer under my eyes, last. This makeup artist started with concealer.

IT concealer brush #203

Although my concealer of choice comes equipped with a paint brush applicator, I always tapped to blend it with my fingers. The makeup pro used a brush.

Clinique Airbrush Concealer

She mixed a small amount of moisturizerĀ with concealer then dabbed this mixture in several locations around my eyes. Next, she swirled the brush over it toĀ blendĀ and blur the concealer. It looked smooth and invisible!

When I got home, I headed to Ulta to ask for brush recommendations. Love beauty #203 Concealer BrushTwo gals said hands down, their very favorite brush for the job is this Love Beauty Fully Blending Concealer Brush #203. There were tons of other options, but they felt this one provided the most precise application and smoothest blending.

It’s made with ultra soft synthetic hair and has a great cap to keep the bristles straight and clean. It concealer brush #203

It’s small enough to fit into small areas yet large enough to get the job done quickly. I also use it with theĀ heavier cream concealer I use for age spots and around my nostrils, which often appear red.

RMS Un Coverup Concealer

The makeup artist also covered the shadows beside my nose, which brightened the look of my eyes. She chose a color them same as, not lighter than my complexion. Most women use too light a concealer and it shows.

It’s not rocket science, but adding this brush to my routine has been a game changer for my concealer.

Have a great day and thanks for reading!

  1. I recently read about NYX Gotcha Covered Concealer. The article said it is a dupe for Tarteā€™s Maracuja Creaseless Concealer. It only costs $6 so I decided to give it a try. It’s fantastic!! (I ordered online through Target). I’ve been dabbing it on with my fingers, which has been okay; however, after reading your article, I’ve been using a brush (it isn’t a concealer brush). The results are good, but I think with the right brush it would be better. My question is about face powder. I try to use very little, but I still don’t like the results. How do you put your on, Jennifer?

    1. I use a brush and swirl it into my skin. I use very little powder because it can end up in my wrinkles šŸ™‚

      1. Thanks for answering, Jennifer – I’m going to try your method. šŸ™‚

      2. Let me know how it goes. Try different pressure and swirl motions.

  2. I ran out to Ulta this morning and bought the IT 203 concealer brush! Then, over to Macy’s and got the concealer. Just tried it (over my made-up face) and I’m impressed. Will mix concealer with moisturizer tomorrow. Thank you so much, Jennifer!

    1. Isn’t it wonderful? That brush is amazing. Blurring the edges is so critical at my age:)

  3. Great suggestions particularly the nose idea. Ironically I do not have dark circles (shocking at my age) but I would love to try the nose trick!

    1. You are lucky, Cindy!! Mine have just started getting darker in the last few years.

  4. Yes, I used to use fingers but use a brush as well nowā€¦.I have tried many concealers and, for me, Bobbi Brown’s corrector and concealer give me the very best coverage. You might want to try it too and compareā€¦.Love your blog, and thanks for all the good tipsā€¦Did you ever do the Nioxin challenge? I never saw any more about it and was curious as to how it worked… My hair is thinning as wellā€¦..

    1. I used to wear a lot of Bobbie Brown and really liked it! Yes, I am using and loving the Nioxin. My follow up post is going out next week. It really worked on me!!!

      1. Will anxiously look forward to it! Thanks!

  5. I recently had my dark circles covered by a Clinique saleswoman in NYC. She added a final layer of powder (with a brush) to set the creamy concealer. It’s made a huge difference keeping the concealer fresh and preventing smudging from mascara on my lower lashes. I always enjoy your blog! Many thanks.

    1. Setting it with translucent powder is a great idea but I have to use it sparingly or it accentuates my wrinkles.

  6. Hey, J…I’ve eliminated concealer from my routine. My daughter said it’s SO last year :)’s
What I’ve done, and all recommended to my by the Cosmetics/Skincare experts at Sak’s 5th Avenue, my second home, is to switch ALL my cosmetics to NARS. Nars Foundation can be applied with a moist makeup sponge (vital!) and absolutely COVERS everything perfectly. Because it’s water soluble it’s easily diluted in places where you need less coverage and applied more dense to the under eye area, etc. NOTE: lesson coming. Before I do anything else, I apply Nars Eye Shadow base to my eyelids, this stuff is worth it’s weight! While I’m applying the makeup base the shadow base it setting. Once the base is on I begin using ONLY Nars eyeshadows, also water soluble so can be blended so well to make a beautiful application. After the eyes are done, I then brush on Nars blush called Orgasm (I know !), then I brush on a blurring powder everywhere, under the eyes and over the makeup and blush. Voila! Then I do eyebrows, pat moisturizer under my eyes, and finally spray rosewater on my face to add moisture and SET the makeup. It is the most beautiful finish I’ve ever seen. No concealer anymore, which I like so much better, as now my face looks completely “finished & perfect” for hours on end.

    1. That sounds amazing Marsha!! I do love the idea of
water soluble. Setting everything with Rosewater is a great idea!

    2. Marsha, which Nars foundation do you use?

  7. I’m going to try this. I have had dark circles my entire life.

  8. How enlightening. Literally. The right tools make all the difference and thanks for sharing the how to and where to find this brush.

  9. Great tips Jennifer!
I too start with the concealer but use only the wand not a brush.
I may try a brush next time!

    1. It makes a huge difference. Let me know what you think.
